if i was a top manager i think the best way to prove my skills would be to manage a struggler like us, anyone could manage barca, or real, or chelsea. its a team with no budget thats the real challenge, why i respect o'neill, hairy redknob etc so much, worked their way up in the proper manner!
Fair point. Would love it to happen but just seems a bit far fetched on some of them.

Interesting that John Milton is 6/1 with Victor Chandler...

That's a brilliant idea, Bixie.

I'm on Twitter. Think I should start a rumour saying that Dave Penney was seen in Torquay?

Didn't Rioch throw his hat into the ring last time Plymouth were looking for a manager? I guess it's not unfeasible that he'd put himself forward for us when you consider this - but again it's pure speculation that he would. I imagine thats where that possibility may have emerged from.

I think initial prices are down to pure speculation - which will derive from looking at sites such as this and the names popping up in the media and will then change based on the number of bets. Trollope becoming favourite on skybet is probably just from people speculating, rather than insider knowledge.

Dispiritng list of candidates on here

Chris Hargreaves 7/4 - For goodness sake. This surely must be down to people assuming it will be him. Really like CH but not as manager or even as a Head Coach. He is not suitable. Maybe as assistant manager but no. Not manager. this would be the equivalent of Bateson appointing Wes Saunders after Kevin Hodges went to Plymouth. Board of Directors. Please learn from history. NO!
Paul Trollope 3/1 The obvious candidate really. Proven track record, albiet one that went sour and links to the club. Progressive young manager. YES!
John Milton 6/1 Who on earth his betting on this? Nonsense. He is a scout. Not a manager. NO!
Sammy McIlroy 6/1 I did wonder whether he would be a candidate. An interesting possibility. Did well at Macclesfield and at Morecambe but it would mean no Craig Stanley signing for us. MAYBE!
Bruce Rioch 8/1 Not much needs to be said about him. Maybe too old and too long out of the English lower league game but a MAYBE!
Geraint Williams 8/1 What? Why? Was crap at Colchester and crap at Leyton Orient. Not with a barge pole. NO!
Guy Branston 8/1 Sometimes promoting from within can work. Sometimes it can be a disaster. I would not be utterly against this. MAYBE!
Alex Russell 10/1 Always struck me as an intelligent thoughtful footballer who could be a good manager. Not yet though. Maybe as an assistant or coach. MAYBE!
Simon Davey 10/1 How many times as this bloke been sacked in the last year. Serial failure as manager. NO!
Martin Foyle 10/1 Another one who always gets the sack. Appoint him and it will only end one way. NO!
Justin Edinburgh 10/1
Did quite well at Rushden but not sure. he can make it on to my long-list. MAYBE!
Lee Hodges 12/1 Too early. Did a good job at Truro but would like to see him do a bit more before we considered him. NO!
Paul Hart 12/1 Can't see that he would come here. Seems to be widely respected and knowledgable when he talks. Yet his record as a manager is shit. NO!
Phil Parkinson 12/1 Can't see it. Did a good job at Colchester than crap ones at Hull and Charlton. Can't see him coming here. MAYBE
Uwe Rosler 14/1 Don't get this one at all. But can't see it would work. What does he know about League 2? Lubos? NO!
Paul Simpson 14/1 Seems to have a mixed track record. Would be ok perhaps. MAYBE
Mark Stimson 14/1 Again. Another with mixed track record. Some successes and some disasters. MAYBE
Dave Penney 14/1 Before Bristol Rovers disaster I would have thought maybe. Did well at Donny and Darlo and not bad at Oldham. Shit at Rovers. NO!
Kevin Hill 16/1 This does not even deserve a comment of acknowledgement. NO!
Martin Ling 16/1 Did a good job at Leyton Orient but a terrible one at Cambridge. NO!
Mark McGhee 16/1 As if he would come here. NO!
Gudjon Thordarson 16/1 Terrible job at Crewe. NO!
Neil McDonald 16/1 Getting board. Crap manager. NO!
John Beck 16/1 As if. NO!
Richard Money 16/1 This bloke keeps getting jobs but he is rubbish. usually gets sacked. NO!
Gary Peters 16/1 No thank you. NO!
Nicky Forster 20/1 Place on longlist. Maybe worth a look. MAYBE!
Keith Curle 20/1 Never done well as a manager. NO!
Peter Taylor 20/1 His career is on a very rapid descent. Don't go anywhere near. NO!
Mike Newell 20/1 Rubbish. NO!
Craig Short 20/1 Disaster at Notts County. NO!
Leroy Rosenior 20/1 NO!
Kevin Blackwell 25/1 No. Sacked everywhere he has been. NO!
Liam Daish 25/1 Has done a decent job at Ebbsfleet. Not sure he is up to it but a MAYBE
Mark Robins 25/1 Just cannot see we could afford him. So not considering it.
John Gregory 25/1 NO way. NO!
Steve Bould 28/1 Could be interesting. MAYBE
Steven Thompson 33/1 Utterly shite record as manager. Whichever Steve Thompson he is...old Yeovil one or ex Sheffield Utd, Notts County. Both crap. NO!

Bit harsh on a couple of the names there.

Geraint Williams didn't do a bad job at Colchester, kept them in the running for a Championship playoff place right up until the last day of the season in his first season in management. Also kept Orient up in his first season there, before struggling a touch in his second.

Richard Money - won the league comfortably with Walsall at this level a few years back, only leaving to become Academy director at Newcastle. Was given the boot by Luton with them sitting second (or third, not sure) in the BSP, behind moneybags Crawley. And then that was primarily because he had a row with supporters when they went over the top in criticising one of his players.

Would not want Stabby Backilroy anywhere near our club. Ditto Paul Simpson, Mark Stimson, Martin Foyle, Martin Ling, John Beck

Also I genuinely think Dave Penney could do a job - I'm prepared to overlook his time at Rovers - we all know that it's a poisoned chalice, and on that Buckle may find an impossible job. Money is also a good shout.

If Sammy McIlroy is interested we should snap him up straight away. Best on that list by a long way.

Not if we have any pretensions to signing Craig Stanley.

I'd take a competent manager over Craig Stanley. Jesus wept, he's not *that* good.

Neithers McIlroy as has been demonstrated this season.

If people are in a furore about the way Buckle treated the club with such contempt when leaving, going for Stabby Backilroy would not be an improvement in morals.

I'd rather we went for his good "friend" Jim Harvey if we were that intent on going for experience.

No way we could afford Parkinson, that would be an outstanding appointment.

I'm up for a bit of Rioch with Hargreaves as assistant. couple of years of that, Hargreaves learn the ropes then take over.

Hargreaves odds lengthened to 5/2 with Victor Chandler now, from 7/4 (still 6/4 with Sky).

Kevin Phillips also added to the list: 12/1 with VC and 10/1 with Sky.

Maybe a little harsh there, I can only see one YES and that's a manager who was sacked at Bristol Rovers.

Buckle came to this club with very little experience, and wasn't evena big name player and did the business, i believe Chris Hargreaves can match that at least.
