United 0 Boreham Wood 1 (Rush 60′)
Vanarama National League South Play-Off Semi-Final United’s battle for promotion ended in heartbreaking fashion at the semi-final stage, as Boreham Wood emerged as winners at Plainmoor. The solitary goal came from Wood’s Matt Rush, with his second-half effort enough to see them through to the National League South’s Promotion Final. Seven days after narrowly missing out on automatic promotion at Hemel Hempstead, Gulls boss Paul Wotton opted to make two changes to his line-up, with Jordan Dyer and Oscar Threlkeld returning to the starting XI in place of Ed Palmer and Omar Mussa. Unsurprisingly for two sides who finished so close to each other in the NLS standings, there was little to choose – or report in the opening stages.

Lirak Hasani’s trademark cut-in from the left resulted in the game’s first shot on target in the 26th minute, however Hasani’s low drive was unfortunately too close to visiting goalkeeper Nathan Ashmore. Although Jordan Young also forced Ashmore into work on the stroke of half-time, the visiting side undoubtedly went closest, as Gulls stopper James Hamon scrambled across his line to keep out a point-blank effort from a Boreham Wood boot, after Abdul Abdulmalik’s low ball across the face of gaol attracted a whole host of visiting bodies. No score at the break though. The pace of the game certainly changed after the change of ends, however after surviving a number of near-misses down Boreham’s flank, United’s luck finally ran out in the 60th minute. A pacy break down the wing preluded a low ball to the near-post, when Rush slid in to poke the ball past Hamon, and just inside the post.

As you’d expect, the men in yellow kept plugging away, but with the Wood’s defence remaining well-organised, expectation began to fade into hope, with Wotton’s side unable to seriously trouble Ashmore as the clock ticked down ominously. Even the additional nine minutes couldn’t save United’s season. A campaign that ends in this manner will always stir up feelings of immense disappointment. That is only natural. However, twelve months on from a close-season that saw Torquay United and its beloved supporters fight for its very existence, there is much still be grateful – and excited about. See you in July, when we will do it all over again.
