Best XI

Post by monkeyboy »

What is our best starting line-up? Here's what I'd like to see.

GK - Rice
DR - Tonge
DC - MacDonald
DC - Pearce
DL - Ives
MR - Briscoe
MC - Young
MC - Richards
ML - Ajala
FC - Bowman
FC - Chappell

NB Really think Chappell could convert to a forward and be pretty useful.

Even at that, it is still a fairly depressing line-up. Being forced to play a 'not fit for purpose' Rice in goal or an even worse understudy in Seabright (just how bad do you have to be to be 2nd choice to Rice?), Tonge or Downes, a want-away winger instead of the 'never score' specialist that is Benyon up front. However I would agree, Chappel, surely couldn't do any worse up front than Benyon. It is disappointing to read of the manner of defeat - especially after the promise of the performance against Exeter but then that goes to show, nothing can be gleaned from friendlies. Perhaps yesterday was more 'Weymouth' than St James Park.

I think most of us realise that Hargreaves is somewhat lumbered with a collection of players, well-paid, no doubt, that he doesn't want and as a consequence we are likely to be frequently embarrassed by tinpot clubs, who pretty soon, will be seen as a more attractive prospects for potential players than us and we will end up wishing if only we could be as good as Gateshead and Woking.

What damage is going tpo be done to the long-term future of the club, whilst we wait to get rid of the deadwood that we are forced to play?

Why are we shoehorning Chappell, who isn't a striker, into that role when Yeoman, who is a striker, is available?

----------------- Rice ------------------

Angus --- Pearce--- Downes --- Ives

---------- Young --- Richards --------

Briscoe ------ Cameron ------- Ajala

--------------- Bowman --------------

Would quite like to see that team when Pearce is fit. Obviously you could change Cameron with Briscoe or Ajala and I'd be happy with Chappell out wide too. I'd have Yeoman on the bench ahead of Benyon.

When Knill signed him he stated that he could play through the middle up front but never played him there. He's got pace and can shoot. :keepie:

Probably spot on the team I'd go for, swap Ajala and Cameron though, I see Ajala as a much more creative player as opposed to Cameron who likes to beat a man and whip in a cross.

He had a conference season with Salisbury at right back before we signed him. Gut feeling says he'll probably be better than Tonge there.

Because Yeoman isn't good enough. Robin Stubbs is probably available - doesn't mean he is up to it.
