Maidstone 1 (Seaman 76′)
United 0 There was disappointment for United at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday, as a late goal sealed all three points for Maidstone. In the end it was Charlie Seaman that came up with the deciding moment of the match, with his late goal proving to be the winner in a tight contest. Gulls boss Paul Wotton opted to make a couple of changes to his starting eleven at the Gallagher Stadium, with Jordan Dyer and Omar Mussa returning to the starting line-up in place of Ed Palmer and Dylan Morgan, who both dropped down to the bench. Although keenly contested, the first half was a largely frustrating affair for both sets of attackers, as the two defensive rosters took charge of proceedings.

The home side came closest to breaking the deadlock on 34 minutes, when Baylin Johnson’s deflected strike cannoned off United’s crossbar, with the Torquay backline doing enough to see the loose ball away from danger. Wotton’s men enjoyed a number of promising ventures into the Stones’ half themselves, however the half-time whistle sounded with the scoresheet still blank. The pattern of the game continued in much the same manner following the restart, with both sides probing without success. That nearly came to an end in the 65th minute, as a wonderful effort from Dan Hayfield forced home stopper Alex Andre Jr into a flying save away to his left to keep the ball out. The hosts created a few more openings of their own, with James Hamon having to be alert to keep out Aaron Blair’s strike as the match entered the final twenty minutes.

In the 76th minute, Maidstone found the breakthrough that both sides craved. Seaman, venturing forward, made the most of United’s retreating defence by firing in an effort that zoomed past Hamon and into the back of the net. Thereafter, The Gulls kept plugging away, but in fairness, the Stones continued to carry enough of a threat themselves, and in the end did enough to keep all three points in Kent.
