Forget promotion under this current manager, relegation is the more realistic future, followed by oblivion. Suspect the future is not yellow.

Mr Tea808 wrote: 19 Nov 2022, 22:03 I think Gary Johnson has got to go,I'm not doubting what's he's achieved in the game, his CV is superb, and the game Vs Hartlepool at Ashton Gate, that for me was a turning point,we've never really been the same since that season, last season was awful, this season it was basically 8 or 9 new first team players all joining at the same time,it was NEVER going to work out,you look at top teams in the Premier League and whenever a side gets SO many new signings all at once,it 9/10 goes t*ts up doesn't it?,and we're NL level,so it was never going to work out, decent players have gone, replaced with sub standard players who are good,no personal dig at any of them, but NL is beyond them, add all the loanees, way way to many, Inexperienced, naive, and not street wise, and sadly that has to be lie with Gary Johnson, the chopping and changing, the repeated errors,I could go on and on.
:goodpost: A very fair and honest assessment Mr Tea, especially with the Nl is beyond them.

We were a penalty kick or a wrongly disallowed goal from promotion 18 months ago under Johnson.
With the amount of money some clubs have now I don't think winning the league is at all likely but like most clubs in the league, a good season could get us in the play offs with potential promotion and a bad one could have us relegated.
I think that would be the same with any manager.

Yes, but to get back into the league this has to come from going up from the Conference Premiere, not from Conference South!

Any deranged belief that we are a league two team in waiting has been bled out of us during the last two years, yes it is about budgets, geography and the ability to attract decent players from a scouting set up that fails on every level and for the second season running.
Johnson maintains the players do not lack confidence, possibly not, but that counts for nothing when in the main they lack the quality to play in this league, in fact several of them lack the ability to be a pro footballers.
I do no want Johnson's career to end with a relegation, but that is what is going to happen unless we change things, and soon.

Totally incorrect to argue that " the scouting set up fails on every level". The National League is extremely competitive and, if the financial resources are not there, as is patently obvious in Torquay's case, regardless of the number of talented players that the club identifies, it is pretty well nigh on impossible to attract them with the remuneration on offer. Look at the attendances at Notts County, Wrexham and Chesterfield for example and the strong financial backing these clubs enjoy. How on earth do you not see that the club's present precarious position is hardly attributable to Gary Johnson's ability as a manager. He has worked competently with the resources at his disposal and deserves support rather than the constant criticism you level at him.

How can you say he has worked competantly with what he has available, name more than two of his summer acquisitions out of the many that could make it in any other NL side, possible donnellan and mcgavin, and when we have a fit eleven they do not feature. There has always been big clubs with big attendances in this league , that will not change. It is ok forJohnson to beg for a bigger squad but when you just go for numbers without thought or consideration of any form of quality or experience then what is the point, instead of a 27 man squad I would rather have a 22 man squad who can perform in this league because as our position shows we cannot.

Alternatively look at the attendances of Woking, Barnet and Solihull. Those are compariable or worse than Torquay's and yet those clubs occupy the play off places.
GJ has **** up, like he eventually did at every other club he has managed. That said I don't think the club will sack him because he appears to enjoy a good working relationship with the owner.

All clubs near either London or Birmingham, meaning it's easy for players to jump between clubs and keep their career going. For someone to uproot their family to the arse end of nowhere (costing thousands, disrupting kids etc) for the pittance of a wage we can offer over ANY of these other clubs (where they can stay living in the major conurbations) is madness. Not to mention that with a 1 year contract, theres ZERO job security, so again why not just stay where you are so that if you get dropped there's options nearby?

Any footballer coming to us has to be DESPERATE and exhausted all their options elsewhere. Everyone asks why we can only get teenagers, not experienced pros, this is why - any experienced pros dont want to uproot their families, whereas young lads with no offers have nothing to lose, and probably dont mind the thought of some nights out with the small town girls. Think of it like any other job, not football manager, and you'll realise how unattractive a proposition Torquay is. It's not the Victorian era any more, no one is coming here for the seaside; all they'll find is drug addicts and charity shops.

GJ is working with the scraps who'll come to us, cos that's all we can get. The players aren't good enough, cos that's all we can get.

It's far more comforting to think "ooohh if we could just change this one thing everything would be okay " cos it's easier than realising how dire out situation is. Sorry to burst some rose-tinted "we're a massive club" bubbles.

Good answer moving the training out of Devon....I think Bristol was mentioned a while back on here as a potential training base.
