What you mean a 3p VAT rise on just on fuel or on everything?
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.

They didn't, it was all part of the Labour grand plan to make everyone in England bankrupt by 2015.austrianandygull wrote:Apparently i've heard that there is/was a planned price increase in the next few months but the Government may postpone it. Oh that's so kind of them, now can they tell me why the planned increase in the first place without lying through their scummy, teeth please if that is at all possible.
Matt.

Well said Matt (and welcome back!)
Labour had put in place some huge planned increases in fuel duty and the coalition has sidestepped MOST of them. It'll be interesting to see what is announced the next budget. I'm sure there is still some of Labour's planned increases on the horizon. We can only hope that the coalition can come up with a way of wrangling their way out of it again.

the fuel duty increase has been around since 1993 by norman lamont in the tory govt and he also introduced the fuel price escalator the 3% rise, and has been increased accordingly.
I think the current problem is highlighted more due to the fact the price is near or at (depending where you are) a record high.

Well at least I'm not talking wet anymore!
I didn't realise that actually SNW. Probably due to the fact I wasn't around then. I'd assume you had already been around the block a few times!
As with a lot of things however this effects people who live in rural areas like Devon and Cornwall the most. Having to travel further on what is one of the most expensive fuel prices in the country would surely kill most small/medium businesses. Most of those business owners would obviously look to reduce their expenditure but fuel is one thing that is almost completely non-negotiable. You can't just phone up a station and try and haggle. Sadly I don't see the price ever coming back down at all.

well good ol' "gorgeous" george........did us a "favour" in the budget today.
cancelled the proposed rise in fuel duty due in september.
however.......
Fuel duty has risen from 45.82p per litre in March 2001 to the current 57.95p per litre.
Hence, about 42% of the pump price ends up in the government coffers as duty. This rises to 59% once value added tax (VAT) has been added, according to the RAC Foundation.
nice eh?

What's the fookin point in cancelling it for a few months if it's going to go back up again to probably a higher price than it is now to make up for the money they have lost postponing the planned rise?!!!
They always get it back you know.

Sounds decent HeritageGull!
I remember watching an England game on TV a few years ago that was in Trinidad and the commentator said petrol prices were about 30p/litre simply as there was little or no demand for it there. That was a few years ago - but still amazing.
