Is Andrew Neal also known as Rocky Neal? Ex-Truro? Or have I confused that?

I’d agree with you about Finch but I think LL is a different proposition and worth looking at. He is playing - and scoring lots of goals - for a team that are only about 10 places below us in the football pyramid and the only thing against him is his age if he is actually 28.

Mr Owers steps down

I really hope the club is not lazy like the Herald Express and considers former players or managers or those who manage minor clubs locally. There are managers out there who we haven’t thought of, who would be more suitable. The likes of Mark Collier, Bobby Wilkinson would be better choices than the #legend route and you’d hope Harrop ha snothing to do with the recruitment this time and this Edwards guy recruits as he would in a company. You choose who you think the best people are, not the most popular or those who used to work there.

FA Cup

Nick Potkins wrote: 11 Sep 2018, 22:18 I was in Lymington today with my wife having a nice family day out, as only an hour from me. Can't believe I'll be returning in 11 days time. This is just up the road from Bashley, who we played a few years back in FA Cup, I guess must be nearly twenty year ago now - this was when we could win cup games.
Are you sure we played Bashley? If we did I’ve forgotten that completely, so apologies if I’m wrong. I know we played Fareham from that area around 88/89.

There is no rational or logical explanation for persisting with Owers other than the deliberate sabotage of the football club. He has been here for a year and it has been the worst year in our history. I’d take Nicholson like a shot over this inept football manager, not that in any shape or form do I want to see Nicholson return.

I guess Owers has a livelihood to protect but he is lucky to be in a job - any other club would have got rid of him months and months ago.

We may be NLS and we don’t expect to win every game but you don’t lose at home to Chippenham. It’s beyond the pale.

Losing to Chippenham 🙄

Chippenham used to be one of those teams that had just a small team photo in the Janner Indy season preview. Our reserves used to beat them. New lows guaranteed with Owers as manager,

Osborne meeting with Kevin Foster MP and Cllr

A lot of supporters bought the David Thomas peddled notion that TUST were a glorified supporters club, raising money for a new lawnmower, whereas with the right support and backing a real supporters movement could have been started. However, in cahoots with the undermining of TUST by David Phillips and Peter Masters who had less than altruistic motives to protect, the Herald undermined - and at the same time helped foster suspicion - of TUST officials from the parochial members of the Pop Side.

Some would say we would have been relegated and struggling had we gone into fan ownership - exactly what happened anyway. If Bath City can prosper under community ownership, in that well-heeled City with little interest in its football team, then why would that be such an unreasonable proposition for Torquay United.

Clarke Osborne will not build TUFC a new stadium. It’s as obvious as night follows day, yet there are gullible fools, no doubt encouraged by David Thomas and the Herald Express buying up this nonsense of a 30,000 capacity venue, even when the drawings for this piece of fantasy (OR OUTRIGHT LIE) are based on images for a stadium in India from 10 years ago. Why doesn’t David Thomas question that instead of going on about some silly video relating to turning a stadium into an arena? He won’t because he’s not a journalist. Spineless and cowardly with his own cosy world to protect rather than question and stadium that is not going to happen!

So those Brucie, those slating Owers are foolish?

Read this gem you posted about Ling - you know, the guy who got us to the play-offs, in a division two leagues higher than this. Owers winning in the NLS is no achievement.

brucie » 16 Oct 2011, 11:12

Not sure how much money I have saved but its in the hundreds of pounds by not going to watch this shite, this season. Mcphee/Saah/Rice/Leadbitter/Atieno/Halpin/Macklin/Rowe-Turner - not one of these players would get a sniff of a first team game in any other League 2 side.
Yet according to Dr Frankenstein the answer to our problems lie within the squad. And you think I am a moron. The answer lies in the fact that we have not got enough League 2 standard players.
Thats the problem pure and simple.
As someone else said we need 35 points for safety. If anyone seriously thinks we will get anywhere near that total with the players we have at the moment they are barking mad.
The board of directors has a decent enough list of candidates for the managerial job and flew in the face of reason by appointing Ling who was clueless in his last job.
God knows how he blagged himself into this job but with Tim nice but dim as chairman is it any wonder?
If anyone seriously thinks that Ling knows what he is doing then consider the article on the official site about Ellis.
Our defence is hopeless - Ellis the only worthwhile alternative cannot get a game due to golden balls Saah. Ellis asks for a transfer so Ling now says he is going to play him in the first team.
Yet he says that Ellis was poor in the reserve defeat against Cheltenham. Now if ever there was flawed reasoning that is it.
It is an unmitigated disaster unfolding as we speak

Go G.O!!

brucie wrote: 30 Aug 2018, 10:02 That's fairly stupid because it isn't going to happen is it - particularly as it appears he has negotiated two loan signings.

Its been pretty dismal stuff so far - no one can argue with that. It appears our forwards are completely lacking any confidence and most teams are just sitting back behind the ball. Monday might have been dire but it looks like another game we should have won really.

What I don't see the point of is people turning up on Saturday and lambasting the players and the manager for 90 minutes. Its just counter productive as far as I am concerned - surely if you pay your money you presumably want to see the team win, so why do anything to jeopardise that?

Take it out on the ref or the opposition but when the game is going on get behind the team. If it doesn't work out then voice your displeasure at the final whistle and I am all for giving Harrop a bit of stick if you can find him holed up in a bunker somewhere.

But during the game - just support the team.
Out of interest were you saying this when Nicholson was manager? Or Ling, Hargreaves, Knill?

Assistant manager?

Southampton Gull wrote: 23 Aug 2018, 09:30 God, if some of these players were actually bullied they'd die of shock. A few random comments from spectators or on a forum is NOT bullying.
If it was only a few random comments in a forum though, Dave. I’ve seen some horrific comments about Jamie on Facebook, some even bringing his mum into it, and to my mind this has been a form of bullying from some cowardly figures who wouldn’t say the same to his face unless they had their mates there.

I find it sad really. Jamie grew up supporting the club and dreamt of being a professional whilst living in the vicinity of Plainmoor. He may make the occasional wrong decision on the field but then who out of us wouldn’t when everything you do is under scrutiny, knowing any mistake will immediately be met by groans and moans?

If Jamie Reid was encouraged he would more likely be a more effective player for Torquay than someone who is harassed and moaned at by those he once stood amongst.

Assistant manager?

I don’t have an issue with Taylor being the assistant manager (although I would if he was made caretaker again).

As for Owers; I’ve not been a fan of his at all and last season would gladly have packed his bags myself if it meant he left. He hasn’t got a very good record as a manager before and after joining Torquay.

However, I think the majority of his recruitment, this season, has been fairly solid. The start isn’t brilliant but it could have been worse and I think the club could do without the upheaval of sacking and looking for a new manager, so I’m hopeful that he can slowly build on this solid but unspectacular start and get us moving in the right direction.

Furthermore, the incident at Slough, I think is one that annoyed even the most ardent of anti-Owers supporters because you simply don’t try and humiliate people like that. The image of Owers looking naturally angry and hurt wasn’t nice to see so I hope the atmosphere is less toxic in Saturday when we ought to win.

If after 10 or so games we are falling away from the play-offs then I hope he goes but in the meantime, as supporters, our energies are probably better served encouraging the team and the manager and stopping the witch hunt and - in some cases - bullying of certain players.

Oxford City v Torquay United 14/08/18

Southampton Gull wrote: 15 Aug 2018, 23:40 Sorry no, too many people are only too well aware of just how crap we were last night. Full time professional club v an organised and determined but ordinary side. They looked more professional, more imaginative and a damned sight more committed to their cause than our lot. The tactics and formation was all wrong and should have been addressed a lot sooner, definitely before their goal. Who is to blame for that?
Then my God we must have been shite in those other three games because if that is what you see as the best we've played all season, even for a spell then I must have been watching a different game. We created a couple of chances all night, against part timers. We were truly awful.
It caused us problems because we kept hoofing it upfield instead of passing to feet, that's exactly what they did. They got it down and played out down the flanks, we're lucky Paterson didn't get much service because he would have scored.

I have no personal gripe against Owers, I just want us out of this shit league into the less shit but still shit one above. I don't mind a spell of consolidation, a few mid table finishes will suffice for me before we at least have a realistic attempt at regaining our League status. Owers has overseen a drop so far from that it's more a pipedream than reality. That's why I will pick holes in the job he's doing. It isn't good enough, never has been good enough and in my opinion is unlikely to ever be good enough.
I would tend to agree with this.

We saw enough last season from a manager with an inept managerial prior to his arrival at Plainmoor to not get our hopes up for this season.

On paper the recruitment has appeared to be ok but then similar was said about Nicholson’s signings a year ago. So the opening three results at least offered some hope we would be challenging, even though the performances were rank, especially against the woeful East Thurrock. So defeat to Oxford (not even the real Oxford) wasn’t unexpected, yet it should be. We cannot win every game but some games we should just not be losing and that is one of them.

How can it get much worse? Well it will - probably when we get knocked out of the FA Cup next month by someone like Willand Rovers.
