Enzo wrote: I agree. O'Kane is he kind of player that you could build a team around. His performance at OT was the one bright point of a crap day. He will be the reason that people pay to watch us play

To suggest that selling Billy, O'Kane and Zebs will see us go down is wrong in my opinion. It is what how we replace them that matters. Zebs is a decent League Two player, but at the moment Billy is conference standard with Sunday morning fitness levels. They are replaceable if the correct man and a workable budget is provided.
Agree to an extent but O'Kane is something special for this level.

It is a lowering of expectations that provides greater satisfaction when we are successful and a sense of proportion when we are not.

If you take it too seriously then TUFC will burn you. When all said and done we are a small club, with small crowds in a footballing backwater.

But we have a passionate and knowledgeable hardcore of support, and a vocal away following that make us what we are.

At the moment we are a league club again. That is success. Just ask Wrexham, Luton, Grimsby, Darlington, York, Mansfield and Cambridge, to name but a few.
I really despair of this sort of attitude. Simply because some clubs are worse off than us does not mean that merely surviving in the league is success. This is the myth that Bateson peddled and the gullible swallowed. There are plenty of 'small' clubs doing better than us...former peers such as Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Colchester, Chesterfield, Bury, Hartlepool, Rochdale...if we ask them you could say we are failing.

Re: According to one of the board...

I can imagine the board would accept £50,000 or less for Zebroski, although you suspect that if it was someone like Barry Fry selling Zebroski Bristol would have to pay £250,000. You just do not get the feeling that our board are good negotiators or know the value of a player.

With regard to Eunan O'Kane...he is the future of our club and I would be fuming if the board sold him cheaply. He is the future for two reasons:
1) On the field...the team should be built around him
2) His value - if the board do not fold and he continues to develop then the sort of fee that maybe he could go for could wipe out a big chunk of the debt and safeguard our future. O'Kane must not be sold cheaply.

Sampson would be a dreadful appointment. Even Grimsby didn't want him. No, no, no! I will cancel my season ticket if they give it to him.

Re: New manager poll

Seems all polls on this site and the other one are between Hughes and Forster.

Here is John Hughes http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/scotland/9294896.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And Forster speaks here (scroll down) http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 247116.stm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then we got Guy Branston and Danny Stevens which we dont know what there doing?
The we got some of the young boys like Palmer, yeoman and spear?

So with a new manager to come in and a fair few players are needed, times will get better just like everyone else i hope no more is taken and makes it worse for us.
Its funny really. I see this squad, bereft of Bevan, Branston, Stanley, Robinson and Tomlin and it seems lightweight and weak. Especially midfield. Those 5 players were essentiall to our promotion push. The squad as it stands is heading for a relegation battle - especially if the wrong manager is appointed. It is a shame we let Charnock go really.

Obviously we need 2 keepers, a right-back, a further central defender, a central midfielder plus 2 wide midfielders and one or two forwards. That is 8 players. Cannot see that happening at all. I really do not rate Rowe-Turner or Macklin and whilst I see promise in Lathrope, he is no Wroe or Stanley. Not yet. The way he was at fault for the Stevenage goal looked like someone a bit slow and easily drawn out of position.

If the new manager has any sense he will build the team around O'Kane but I would see Mansell or someone else in midfield alongside him. Not Lathrope. For me, he is still a squad player, as is Halpin and Macklin.

That defence at the moment looks like it could easily go AWOL. Branston is a must.

Re: Little club syndrome...

Agree with everythign Fonda says. A lot of this stems back to the Bateson days when he constantly preached the mantra that we were too small to be a league club and that being a league club we were punching above our weight. A lot of people swallowed this claptrap and relegation in the end became a self-fullfilling prophecy.

Buckle was canny enough to tap into this mindset when trying to inflate his achievements by suggesting it was an incredible feat to get Torquay into the League 2 play-offs, conveniently forgetting that we had done the same thing in 1988, 1991, 1994 and 1998 and got promoted in 2004 all on shoestring budgets and under managers probably getting less backing and support than Buckle.

It is the natural thing to do. Preach smallness and nobody can moan if you do not improve.

But like you, I feel the board cannot get more people through the gate, attract better players, managers or coaches if the messages coming through are doom and gloom 'we are small-fry'.

Matt.
You mentioned that Hargreaves' popularity as if it was soemthing to consider when appointing a manager as you mentioned it was something 'not to be under-estimated'.

My point is that his popularity should not even come into it. Being popular might buy you a bit of credibility for a few weeks but it would soon vanish with players he does not pick and with supporters watching a losing team.

Popularity of candidates is the last thing that should be considered.

ferrarilover wrote:While I agree with your surmising that Jesus is not the man for the job, he is not perhaps quite such a daft suggestion as it may seem prima facie.
He has his badges, qualifying him as a coach, so, theoretically at least, he is equally as qualified as any other men on the list (more so than Gareth Southgate upon his appointment with Middlesborough, although he was the single worst manager in football history, so perhaps not the best example).
Further, he has vast experience in the world of modern professional football, which is undoubtedly evolving so fast as to render any experience greater than, say, two years old, almost wholly irrelevant.
He is clearly of sufficient mental capacity to succeed as a manager.
He knows the club, he commands respect from the board and his fellow professionals.
He is popular with the fans, an element not to be underestimated (I'd wager there will be more chants of "Chris Hargreaves Yellow Army" in a single match than there was of the corresponding song during the stewardship of PB).

While I do not doubt that many if not all of the other candidates would have these attributes too, espressio unius est non exclusio alterius.

Matt.

Wes Saunders was also popular with the fans until he becamse manager.

Re: Exciting Times Ahead...

It could be exciting or depressing depending on who is appointed. The fact that Chris Hargreaves is on the shortlist suggests that he is actually being taken seriously above at least 44 of the 'serious' candidates.

Bearing in mind that really, Hargreaves should not be anywhere near the post, just how poor were the people who did not make it onto the shortlist?

It sort of worries me about the board's judgement a little, so I cannot get excited yet. It is more like a sharp intake of breath before the wince of possible pain.

Why, for goodness sake? We all have a passion for TUFC but it does not makes us suitable managers. CH is too nice a bloke and too matey with the players to command authority. You point out he has no managerial expertise and simply think risking our whole club's future by 'giving hima shot' is worth it because he said he would fly a TUFC flag at his shop.

Let us just hope that none of the directors feel as easily pleased as you.

The weather has had a big part to play on last season's downturn in attendances. We have averaged over 2,900 on Saturdays in both of the last two seasons - the big difference is we only get around 1,800 through the turnstiles on Tuesday evenings and there were six midweek games this season as opposed to three the year before.

Improving Tuesday attendances (any suggestions?), a bit of luck with the weather plus the three big "derbies" and the inevitable bounce from having the new grandstand should help us get the right side of 3,000 next season - provided we have a modicum of success on the pitch!
This is the key...if we have a crap season then crowds will drop below 2000, whoever the manager is.

KlinK wrote:Just come off the phone with a friend of mine who is a long term Falkirk season ticket holder and, I think, a shareholder. He was less than complimentary about Hughes and commented that his record does not tell the full story. He thought Hughes inherited a good (and big) squad when getting Falkirk promoted but in trying to raise their level brought in ageing cronies on long contracts that eventually left them in a poor financial position from which they have not yet recovered.

He thought Hughes's main attribute was that he was a very hard worker but he was stubborn; bullied the players; only had a plan A; and when things were going well was constantly touting himself around for bigger jobs. My friend does have some knowledge of TUFC and thought that Hughes would be disastrous for us in our current state but he did think he wouldn't get the job as he wouldn't be able to string a coherent sentence together in an interview. He also felt, for some reason, that Hughes had burnt his bridges in Scotland and was unlikely to find another reasonable job there.

There are always two sides to every story and I have been on the Falkirk fans website (onefinfalkirk) and, as usual, there are many varying opinions of his managerial capabilities.

As for Lee Bullen my friend said he was brought into Falkirk by Hughes and has stayed on as coach but would be a complete unkown as a manager.
Mind you being a complete unkown as a manager would also apply to several other of our candidates and our previous manager.

Of interest my friend was telling me that Falkirk's crowds in the SPL averaged around 11,000 and are averaging around 4 - 5,000 in Division 1. So even now their crowds are double ours. Another point of interest is that Jack Compton, who was born in Torquay and had a trial with us a couple of years ago, made 23 appearances for them last year.

Although Scottish this friend has spent a great deal of time in the southwest London area and knows many Brentford supporters who think Forster would be a good choice.

Funny as I have just posted on another thread that I would want Hughes but at the back of my mind I did wonder whether he might represent a tactical genius or a blood and thunder bellow and shout at the players type of manager, which of course, we would not want to see here.

Really confused now...as I don't know the candidates...if Hughes is not that type of manager and is a bit more considered, then his record and pedigree is promising and I would go for him. However, if his approach is a bit bullying and draconian, then someone more enlightened like Forster is meant to be would be my preferred choice...even though on this, I did initially vote for Hughes.
