Can Hargreaves and hodges keep us up this season

People seem to be forgetting the Ian Atkins 'great escape' here (or weren't supporting then. In which case, fair enough).

We were bottom, six points adrift with six to play. Dead and buried. Then he came in, and achieved this:

Sat 15 Apr 2006 CHELTENHAM TOWN H L 1-2
Mon 17 Apr 2006 MACCLESFIELD TOWN A W 2-0
Sat 22 Apr 2006 WREXHAM. H W 1-0
Tue 25 Apr 2006 STOCKPORT COUNTY H W 4-0
Sat 29 Apr 2006 CARLISLE UNITED A W 2-1
Sat 06 May 2006 BOSTON UNITED H D 0-0

Carlisle were top of the league as well and champions elect. I admit it looks extremely bleak right now, but this is why I can't bring myself to totally give up just yet.

Portsmouth v Torquay

Fantastic afternoon. What a day out!

Everyone excellent. Placed some really nice stuff first half and scored a quality goal, before keeping it really tight and absorbing a hell of a lot of pressure second half to see it out. Well done Greavsie - some brave decisions today that really paid off.

Quick mention for Pompey. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the ground, and off course the Yellow Army (all 741 of us) making immense noise. Bumped into Joe Oastler on the way in as well (think Aldershot's game was off) - a top man who, despite being a Portsmouth boy, came and sat in the away end with us. Legend.

Also a mention for the pitch invasion by a fox, and the brilliant interception by the ref stopping a intricately worked Pomley corner.

Poke - 7 - did he have a meaningful save to make? Can't remember one.
Tonge - 7 - liability first half but improved and did well in the second.
Pearce - 9 - fantastic, best I've seen him. Few kamikaze moments, but really solid overall.
O'Connor - 9 - as per Pearce. Fantastic display. So assured, confident and never put a foot wrong.
Nicho - 7 - first time this season where I've not seen him battling a pacy winger, and he did really well.
Goodwin - 8 - didn't see much of the ball in an advanced position but the amount of tracking back and defending he did was akin to a player far more experienced than him. Bodin, Stevens - take a look. That's how to defend as a winger. Superb
Labadie - 8 - powerful, controlled, excellent in the pass. Did well to set up the goal, too,
Lathrope - 9 - did so much quiet and understated work, barely misplaced a pass and superb in the tackle.
Bodin - 7 - did well with the goal but frustrating otherwise. Got the ball in good positions and then wasted the chance. A big improvement, though, and hopefully a confidence booster.
Stockley - 7 - won a lot of high ball and had a great shot saved first half. Did ok on a difficult day chances-wise.
Benyon - 6 - as with Stockley, a difficult day for the strikers but nothing came off for him today.

AFC Wimbledon v Torquay United match thread

What a day! Absolutely loved every minute.

Would've totally understood if Greavsie had shut up shop, and tried to scrape us some wins, but we really went for it today, and played some great attacking football, and defended brilliantly as the game wore on.

Pearce showed great composure for the first, absolutely burying the rebound after Stockley's shot was saved, before Stockley himself glanced a header in after great work from Labadie and O'Connor. Even Deadman couldn't ruin it for us!

In truth, they weren't so much poor as we were good. We totalled dominated; looking dangerous every time we came forward, and, in the second half particularly, very time a cross or a long ball went up in the air, a yellow body seemed to be on the end of it. We simply wanted it more.

Yes there was the 'new manager bounce', but there was plenty of evidence that this wasn't a one-off. In just a short space of time, Greavsie's already managed to instill passion, commitment, enthusiasm, belief, flight, and a willing to die for a cause. Totally deserving of the ovation at the end, as were they all. The Gulls are staying up!

Poke - 7 - little to do, did it well
O'Connor - 9 - fantastic, absolutely everywhere, marauding forward and defending brilliantly,
Downes - 10 - heroic. Didn't miss a header or tackle - imperious, and back to his best.
Pearce - 7 - great goal. Bit wobbly at times but didn't do too much wrong.
Nicho - 9 - legend. If we'd played Cruise we wouldn't have kept a clean sheet. His experience was vital.
Manse - 8 - the manse of old was back. Fight, commitment, tackling, it was all there,
Lathrope -7 - did the quiet stuff really well. Always there to clean up.
Labadie - 7 - strong, powerful, didn't misplace a pass all afternoon.
Hawley - 7 - probably his best game for us. Not brilliant, but didn't do too badly.
Benyon - 8 - so much effort, didn't stop running, deserves a few goals!
Stockley - 10 - Joint MOTM. Won every ball, fantastic first touch, brought others into play. Good finish for the goal too.

Anyone else hear?

Bournemouth Echo saying that Greavsie is "understood to be pondering manager's job offers from both Northampton and Torquay".

No question as to where he'd have more resources etc, but might choose us with the location. If it's going to be a rookie, it may as well be Jesus!

Who will it be?

Another one from Neil Perrett of the Bournemouth Echo (not sure why he's this interested!)

@neilperrettecho: Robbie Fowler expected to be among the applicants for the vacant manager's job at Torquay. #tufc #LiverpoolFC

Sure he was mentioned as interested before Ling got the job. No thanks.

Who will it be?

Neil Perrett, sports reporter from the Bournemouth Echo has just tweeted this:

"Echo understands Torquay are preparing to make a formal approach for #afcb first-team coach Chris Hargreaves to be their new manager".

He's @neilperrettecho on Twitter. Story on their website says he's already had an interview at Northampton though, may have speeded up our sacking of Knill: http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/ ... ay_return/

Dagenham & Redbridge v Torquay Utd - 21/12/13

Just got back home. Get in! Not seen us win since Northampton away...that was long overdue!

It was an odd game, a draw would probably have been about right given the number of chances they had, but Poke pulled off a few outstanding saves to keep them out, and lady luck was finally wearing her TUFC bobble hat as Rhys Murphy hit the post from point blank range.

The first half was real end to end stuff, plenty of chances for both sides. Dagenham were always dangerous on the break, and Pokey had to pull off a good save to his left at his near post from Hines after a neat triangle move. At the other end, Mozika headed onto the roof of the net, and Chapell found the side of it after great work from McCourt and Bodin.

The best chance of the half probably fell to Marquis, when Chapell's cross from the right dipped after taking a deflection, allowing Marquis a volley with the goal at his mercy. Lewington in the Daggers goal pulled off a save not too dissimilar to Poke at Histon to keep it out.

We also could, and should, have had a penalty when Marquis was clean through on goal from the left, only to be tripped from behind by the defender. The ref, who had a shocking afternoon all round, gave nothing (the first of many odd decisions).

After the break, we only took four minutes to grab a deserved goal. Bodin chased a long ball on the right, beatthe keeper to it and rounded him, only to try and cross it rather than shoot, meaning it ended up getting blocked for a corner. From the resultant corner, Downes lost his man and thumped in a header from the centre of the box. 1-0!

From there, though, we regressed massively and seemed content to sit on what we had (perhaps not without reason), and had to withstand an onslaught from the Daggers. D'Ath curled one just wide, Murphy - as I mentioned before - hit the post, and Pokey had to make several smart stops after some excellent build up play...but somehow we did it! A huge three points - I'd forgotten what that felt like!

Poke - 8 - Solid. Few outstanding saves, kicking a bit iffy at times but horrendous conditions.
Tonge - 6 - Got given the runaround by Hines, particularly in the first half, but tightened up in the second.
O'Connor - 7 - As usual, solid, calm, dependable, brings the ball out of defence and looks for a pass.
Downes - 9 - MOTM. Nothing got past him, absolutely herculean effort. And of course the winning (and only) goal.
Cruise - 5 - Our poorest player for me. Absolutely no positional sense, and disappointingly ducked out of quite a few challenges.
Manse - 6 - Not much went through the middle today, so a little subdued, but no complaints.
McCourt - 7 - Best I've seen him. Few sublime cross-field balls and gets stuck in. Wayward passing as well at times but did well.
Mozika - 6 - As per Manse. Lots of running, determination and effort, but didn't see much of the ball.
Chapell - 7 - Bit quiet from him, but looked a threat with the ball at his feet, was direct and put in some useful crosses.
Bodin - 8 - Best I've seen Billy in ages. Played with confidence and made a huge difference.
Marquis - 8 - Really like the guy. Bustling, physical striker with great composure, was unlucky not to score or win a pen.
