Barnet v Torquay : Saturday 19th November 2022 3.00

We’ll come good. A few additions to this squad in January and he’ll turn it around. You can see he is making good improvements with the players he has got at his disposal already. A much better defensive display today against a very good side. We’ll finish mid table. We just have to get behind the players and coaches. Encouragement, not criticism.

Personally, I think we should start building for the future. I’d play him and Tomlinson centre halves. Take a few errors on the chin from both of them, but they’ll gain huge experience and then be ready to go again next season - all the better for it. GJ knows how to spot a good player - it’s just they have to start realising their potential!

Barnet v Torquay : Saturday 19th November 2022 3.00

Keep calm! It’s not how we start, it’s how we finish the season. I’m sure GJ has this all in hand. Judging after less than half the season is madness. Let’s give him time. Barnet are a very good side, possible promotion contenders, so to only concede 1 demonstrates our defensive improvements. In GJ we trust!

Boreham wood v Torquay Tues

Have to agree re Lapslie. He certainly looks one of our more ‘adequate’ signings in the summer.

Can’t wait for the “players not up to this standard” to be offloaded and GJ new signings to be unveiled. Certainly need pace, but also more than satisfactory ability in the position they’re signed for.

Anyone have any news on the new players incoming?

To expand - we've put together one half of decent football (1st half vs Maidenhead where we went in at HT 4-0 up). We were looking really good at Notts before having a man sent off after 25 minutes, and did pretty well for the rest of the game (1-1)

We've played 3, lost 3 at home. Conceded 10 goals. Our defence has all the strength of a 3 week old flan, so if you make any effort to get at them, you're probably going to get a result.

Our recruitment in the summer was...substandard, no doubt in part due to the hugely contracted off season. PO final was June 21st so we had about 3 or 4 weeks less than everybody else to bring bodies in, and I think the uncertainty over which division we'd be in meant we missed out on several of our targets. Gary Johnson said the other day that he expects to move out some of the people he brought in (yeah, I dunno how either). So things aren't looking great.

I think GJ is the best man for the job, despite a few early rumblings from various whinging malcontents. I mean, who could replace him? Our target this season was not to win the title as that seems unrealistic given the money thrown around and the players we lost - but half a dozen games in some are talking about relegation even though I believe playoffs are still possible.

Very much looking forward to the last day of the season at Southend, too, since a lot of us have very fond memories of a last day there 17 years ago!
 What an amusing, but accurate summary!

rivieratouch wrote: 15 Sep 2021, 17:07 Well, I found out that Halstead played the first half last night with a concussion from the previous game, so shouldn't really have played at all. I for one, think he will come good when he has settled, as he has left his young family behind, and is buying a place in the town, so for those of you hoping that he us one if those to be ditched....I would think again
Just about sums up our medical team. Sounds like negligence to me. Concussion is taken so seriously now - if in doubt, sit them out! The player is not at fault for wanting to play, it would be down to the medical team who would surely have to rule them out based on concussion assessment. They have to act in the best interests of the player in this instance. Perhaps all tests were fine though, in which case he wouldn’t have been concussed and would have been fine to play.

It’s all well and good GJ saying some players aren’t up to the standard and they won’t get a “group of games” here, but we have an injury depleted squad. So all of these players he is criticising, he will no doubt have to rely on to go out and perform whilst he attempts to off-load them and try to bring in their replacements. Seems a strange man-management tactic!? May be reverse psychology at play in a last ditch attempt to get his new recruits at least showing some passion?

All defenders hate pace but when they play us they can push high up the pitch knowing that they won't have to worry about balls in behind them. This in turn means their midfield are pressing high up on our midfield and defence resulting in us hoofing the ball up to Wright because there are no other options. 2 pacey Strikers, a pacey Winger and hurry up with that experienced Centre Back, just like that number 6 for Grimsby, Waterfall.

Signing any player at this level, they will clearly have some flaws in their game. It’s the ability of the Manager and coaching staff to minimise those flaws by playing them in positions that they flourish, supported by players who allow them to bring the best out of their game. The trouble is we have signed a GK who, by all accounts, is renowned for being a liability with crosses, then having full backs who struggle to stop crosses.

A simple solution in my opinion, would be to tell him not to come for crosses, but let your two dominant centre halves deal with the crosses coming in. No grey areas… just head anything that comes into the box. This would reduce his decision making, then allow him to concentrate on any shots on goal.

CourtierGull wrote: 13 Sep 2021, 23:29 Buckland athletic? Well that’s certainly a major step up from Newton 66.
 Looking at his playing career, I see the current goalkeeping coach, Ken Griffiths, started life as a trainee with Torquay, before moving to Leicester City where he spent a few seasons. A brief spell at Hereford, before playing a majority of his senior career for Bideford under ex Gulls favourite, Sean Joyce. The latter years have been spent with Buckland.

The early years of his career should have hopefully given him an insight in to how to be an effective goalkeeping coach - additional tasks, such as scouting for future GK signings, (knowing who is available and when), would be undertaken surely at the request of GJ.

However his decision making on crosses was poor and he made a huge number of errors. Even when Adams game him a chance last season he made an error and never got another chance. Would be a good keeper if he can cut out the mistakes.’

Taken from shrimpsvoices former players thread, so how much scouting on him did we do? Were McDonald and Cov both gonna sign no matter what happened in GJ’s mind?

There’s a good goalkeeper there somewhere, but we aren’t going to get it anytime soon
Maybe that’s why our former Keeper Coach left. Perhaps he didn’t have any options for GJ when Cov and Mac left… meaning a very short and desperate attempt to sign a free agent. Very disappointing if this is the case.
