THE BUDGET

happytorq wrote: 16 Mar 2023, 16:09 A lot of assumptions here that are probably not the case. We have season ticket holders who will contribute to the attendance but will be paying significantly less that £18 a game. I don't know exactly what STs cost, but I'd guess it's about £15 a game, on average. And thats not counting "concession tickets" and Under 18s, which will be cheaper both for STs and for pay-on-the-day. If I had to guess, I'd suggest that the average ticket cost for a home game is somewhere around £16.

You've also not mentioned the non-playing staff that the club employs. Obviously the management and other non-playing football staff are part of it (there are 9 people listed on the website), but there are bar staff, etc. (I think the food places are franchised out, so there's no labour cost there. Although it presumably also means there's a flat revenue from that, too). You've also got a the 'communications officer', and the people who help the club run without getting involved on the playing side. It soon adds up.

You've also assumed that all of that million a year loss (think it's a bit less on the most recent accounts, but that's mostly irrelevant for this excercise) is going on players. What about massively increased energy costs? Running the stadium costs money. Police presence has to be paid for. You've got to make sure the floodlights are on (i saw somebody else mentioned that we get it subsidised, which is news to me), and the heating/showers work in the changing rooms. Stewarding? I believe that costs money.

If you look at the playing side you could go through all 24 and make a case that at least half a dozen of them haven't provided the value for money you might expect. Dan Martin has been injured all season. Hall has been in and out. Crowe hasn't been sighted recently. But that's just part of having a playing squad. (you could definitely make the case that if Martin and Hall had been able to play 25 games each this season we'd already be safe)

I would appreciate some transparency from the club about the budget, but we're never going to get it. Johnson won't say anything (if he hasn't by now), and we know the owner likes to sit in his cave not saying a word. I very much doubt we have a top 4 budget but equally I'd assume we don't have a bottom 4 budget. Have said elsewhere that I do firmly think the plan this year was to bed in new signings, allow Wrexham and Notts to bugger off, and then hopefully have the nucleus of a good team next year. Clearly that hasn't worked and now we're worrying about Dorking's results all week.

Anyway - if we go down the budget will surely have to be reduced. I suspect that'll mean no Moxey, no Hall, probably no Lapslie (I think his contract will be up), and possibly Halstead will leave - he's arguably done enough to get a deal another NL club if he wants.

We'll presumably have 4 or 5 of the players brought in last summer still under contract (at a guess - Jarvis, McGavin, Hanson, Donellan, possibly Crowe). We'd probably offer deals to Moyse, Tomlinson and Koszela on the 'youth' side - because they're likely to be inexpensive - and consider keeping Omar, Marshall, Martin, if we can agree a contract length/amount. Of course, they could fancy their chances elsewhere but all of these have questions to answer and I can't see too many clubs lining up to take them, especially we'd be entitled to a fee for both Omar and Martin if we do offer them..something (they're both under 24 till the autumn). Either way, rebuild incoming - even if we do somehow manage to get out of the shit - yet again.
You also have to factor in the 2 F A cup matches against Derby which each club received £67,500 for live TV coverage and a similar amount for the replay along with the gate receipts which must total at least £150,000.

THE BUDGET

So Uncle Clarke is losing up to 1 million quid a year pumping his money into the club. So where exactly does all this money go? The club has 24 players under contract including 18 year old Jack Windsor and 20 year old Olaf Koszela. The average attendance at Plainmoor is around 1,900 which brings in around £34,200 ( £18pp) each match. We play 23 home games a season which brings in a total of £786,600. For this example, let's say that this money is used to pay for off field expenses including non playing staff wages, travel and hotel expenses etc. So the only place that losses come from is the players wages.

£1,000,000 divided by 24 squad members equals a salary of £41,666 per player. If you break this figure down further, that's a wage of over £800 per week. Obviously this is an average figure, some players will be on much more than this and the younger players will be paid less.

Of course nobody knows the true figures and this is just an estimate. I don't think I'm far off and so yet again the people who blame the owner for not giving the manager the funds, we'll £800 a week for playing non league football must put Torquay in the top 10 of the wages league.

Gary Johnson, stick or twist? - As of 07/03/23

hector wrote: 09 Mar 2023, 19:04 Stick or twist, it really doesn’t matter.

Those shouting for Johnson to go or making polls about whether he should be sacked are really missing the point. Whether he stays or goes will not make a blind bit of difference.

If TUFC were a well-run club where the owners were in it for the football and had a modicum of ambition, then changing the manager might alter things but we have a club owned by Clarke Osborne. The downward trajectory is set and will continue while he owns the club.

No one knows what sort of budget Gary Johnson has to work with unless they are a liar but just look at the squad; it can’t be much and certainly not one that could attract the sort of players we have lost over the last two years.

Just look at the sporting entities that Clarke Osborne has been involved with and what happens to them; TUFC is just the latest in a long line clubs suffering from “managed decline” - changing the manager won’t alter the direction this club is heading. It’s futile when the ownership have no interest in the team prospering.

We are about to suffer relegation to regional football for the second time in five years under Clarke Osborne, our lowest level previously played at almost 100 years ago and yet here we are about to be in the same division as Taunton Town. If Johnson goes just who do people imagine someone as uninterested as Clarke Osborne is going to appoint?

It’s almost as if there are people stupid enough to think things will get better if we change the manager. This isn’t a normal football club so wake up to who the real villain in this piece is.
Oh dear the Uncle Clarke bashers are finally coming out of the closet. Osborne made a statement following the club's AGM on the 30th of September. In said statement, Uncle Clarke said that he is still fully committed to Torquay united football club and the only thing that has changed is the number 5 in his plans for the club. Blaming Osborne is ridiculous.

Uncle Clarke part 812

I can't believe that some people are starting to attach some of the blame on the owner for the current plight of our beloved football club. When Osborne took over the club, he had a 5 year plan which included getting Torquay back into the football league. For various reasons, including the covid pandemic, the 5 year plan has failed to become a reality. Don't forget however that Torquay failed by a penalty kick a few years ago to reach the promised land.
Since then we have been up against clubs such as Wrexham who do not win promotion, they simply buy there way into the football league. Wrexham have 4 players on over 4 grand a week in their squad. At present at least 20 clubs have zero chance of automatic promotion. You cannot expect Clarke Osborne to compete with such teams. Yes, Osborne has failed to act by sacking the manager, something he should have done last year but you have to remember it's George Edwards who is responsible for running the club not Osborne. Goodness knows how much the owner has wasted on the club, my guess is around 6 million. What more do you expect him to do?
I haven't counted the number of players Johnson has used this season, my guess is that it must be around 25. Also don't forget the waste of money being spent on an assistant manager and the shambles that is Peter Johnson.
We also have players out on loan, how many seasons has Olaf Koszela who is a full time professional aged 20 years old whose wages are eating into the budget. Koszela made his debut for the club during the 2018/2019 season and 4 years later he has only played 20 times for the club. " he's one for the future" says the manager, I'm surprised that Edwards has allowed this to happen.
So please stop blaming the owner, the predicament of my beloved Torquay United is down to one man, Gary Johnson.

I see that Gateshead were yesterday deducted 1pt for fielding an ineligible player. This could be very important in our battle against relegation.

Torquay United v Bromley - Tues 28th Feb

I was just looking back at my post on October 9th 2021 when we played Bromley away. It was one of the worst performances I've ever seen in over 40 years of watching my beloved Torquay United Football Club. In that post I called for the sacking of the management team and got a stack of abuse on this forum. I could see back then that Johnson had lost it, not a single player performed that day and as a result I vowed never to watch my beloved team under the management of Gary Johnson. In the following 18 months, sadly I've been proved right. We have an owner who has repeatedly stuck by his promises and is probably the best part of 6 million quid in to the club.
It is Gary Johnson alone who has ruined this football club, shafted the owner and looks like taking us back to where he started, the national league south.

Chelston TUFC wrote: 22 Jan 2023, 20:38 If you watched Match of the Day as stated it would make sense. Clearly you didnt. We are going down like Everton due to disinterested owner, a manager that should have been sacked, no one to score goals, a leaking defence, poor tactics and formation.

Just to clear it up for you
So much negativity. We have just signed 4 or 5 players in a couple of weeks who can't be worse than the tosh they are replacing. Scunthorpe are bottom and in turmoil on and off the pitch and along with Gateshead are doomed. I think Yeovil are also in deep trouble along with Maidstone and neither have strengthened their squads significantly. Add Dorking into the mix, none of these sides show little signs of improvement. Torquay on the other hand have a bunch of new signings and I think that with 20 games remaining, 8 wins, 2 draws and 10 defeats giving us 48 points will be more than enough to save us from relegation. I just can't see the sides that I've mentioned getting 48 points as they simply haven't strengthened their squads and we have.

PS Clarke Osborne for PM!!!!!!!!!

I think people have got things all wrong. Gary Johnson has been an awful manager for the last 18 months. He is very fortunate to still be in a job, most clubs would have sacked him at least 6 months ago but forever reason the owner has stood by him. The one man who yet again has saved Torquay from relegation is Clarke Osborne. Yet again it's his money that is clearing up the mess that Johnson has made in his awful signings over the last year. I am now very confident that we will now easily avoid relegation by allowing Johnson to bring in more experienced players than the crap team that Johnson put together pre-season. All true supporters need to be thankful that Uncle Clarke has yet again saved our beloved club from the abiss. Thank you Clarke Osborne.

North Curry House wrote: 08 Jan 2023, 13:48 What idiot is thinking we can make the playoffs ? Let us just get out of the bottom four by the end of the season, that should be our ONLY objective.

Dorking, Alsershot and Maidenhead will all drop down the table...we need to take advantage. Three points against Bromley on Tuesday week will help. Let us get behind the team.
Exactly North Curry House. The remarks I made were me being sarcastic. They were directed at the morons who still believe that Gary Johnson is the best thing ever to have happened to our club, a club he has set back many years and put us in a position similar to Gary Owers did 5 years ago. The only difference is that Uncle Clarke is 5 million quid poorer.

Can we make the play offs?

Well after our fantastic victory against Halifax yesterday and all the positive comments made on this forum, id thought that I'll chip in with my tuppence worth. Yesterday was only our second home victory out of 13 this season and only our fifth win all season out of 26 games played. Halifax have only managed 2 wins on the road from 13 matches. We currently sit in the relegation zone and yet you would think that from several comments made on the forum after yesterday's match, we were on the verge of the play offs. Maybe I'm wrong, we're only 15 points off 7th placed Wealdstone with 20 matches to play. Gary Johnson has turned from 79% of fans wanting him out according to the poll Louis started several days ago, to now 56% of people who voted wanting him to stay.

I feel sorry for people like Louis who i suspect puts a lot of time and effort in to making sure that this forum runs smoothly. It's such a shame that Louis and all the other administrator's, yes including you Southampton Gull, put in so much hard work so that true supporters who like to voice their opinion have a platform to do so. It therefore saddens me that the idiots on this forum have to spoil and make a mockery of their hard work as the Gary Johnson poll proves.

Southampton Gull wrote: 03 Jan 2023, 20:43 This is why I've always kept faith in Gary Johnson. When he knows exactly where we are at the point it comes time to the final roll the dice who better than him to get it right and avoid being relegated. Calling for him to be sacked in November is just plain stupidity against the backdrop of the ownership of the club. It must be obvious to anyone that our budget wasn't great, he got what we paid for, what he was allowed to within the budget. He doesn't deserve the treatment usually dished out by followers of the Premiersh!te.
Oh come on SG, this is the national league for goodness sake. Surely Johnson had a bigger budget than the likes of Gateshead, Scunthorpe, Aldershot etc. Many clubs in our league are in serious financial crisis, Torquay united are not. What's it going to take you and other Johnson supporters to realise he's leading the club towards relegation ? Perhaps when we're 10 points from safety with 3 games to go will change your opinion

I am still of the belief with 3 in and 3 out we can still

Bugger up.
Hall and Moxey? Sounds like a great name for an estate agency or Mrs Dawlish says a police detective series on TV !!!!!!!!!
