Greeks in crisis

The place is an absolute shambles. The whole club generates income hand over fist, yet there's no discernable improvement in anything. Their squad is worse than ever, they've done nothing to their hovel or their training ground, they've not spent the money on anything, so where's it gone? No one knows because the whole place, top to bottom, is a total mess.
The squad, the ground, the set-up, all screams non-league (and probably not even Conference Premier level either). Time to chuck the current club in the bin and start again.

The Gulls v Gateshead (away) 9 August 2014

Anyone else watching the Rovers v Grimsby game? Absolutely devoid of any discernable quality from either side. No pace, no width, no real ability, no game plan, no particular control over the ball, nothing.

I can't wait until we're beaten by both...

Matchday Preview?

I'm going to need people to send me their bank details to I can return the money. As we suspected, the details of the sender are not shown to the recipient. Please PM me (Pea) the details of the account to which you'd like the money paid. If you want cash, you can have cash, but please let us know before Tuesday (we'll be at Welling).

Tom Cruise

Kit_robin wrote:People keep saying that Cruise is good on the ball, but from the evidence of my own eyes this seems to be more from reputation than reality. I lost count of the amount of times last season he gave the ball away or inexplicably passed it out of play. He has been little better in preseason. Added to that he cannot clear the ball properly, head the ball or tackle. Other than that he's a brilliant full back.

However this is a short term deal. Some insurance in case Ives can't cut it? Seeing whether Bournemouth change their mind on car gill once the season starts? A LB top of the shopping list when/if one of the listed players leave? All possible and I hope one of them is correct, as I have seen little improvement in Cruise since his arrival.

Since totnes (when the first team started playing), we have conceded six preseason goals. From my reckoning cruise has been at direct fault for three of them. He almost cost us two at Exeter, but for a goal line clearance and a skewed shot. Tonge is no great shakes but he defends better than cruise. Tells you all you need to know.

NB: this post seems quite forcefull but it's not meant as such. I am sure he is a lovely bloke, and it would be fantastic if he proved me wrong, but at the moment this is how I see it.
This... times a billion. Inexplicable really is the word for it. The times I've watched him have about 15 minutes to control a ball, look up, spot a team mate all of 15 yards away, then inexplicably pass the ball straight to an opponent. It's almost worse than Nico's famous old trick of knocking a 50 yard channel ball EVERY SINGLE TIME, despite Rene Howe not getting on the end of a single one from August to April.

Hector's an idiot. I credit you, my dearest Joe, with a more keenly honed sense of fun and ability to appreciate that a gentle probe at your expense need not be cause for offence.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR ALEX ROWE AND THE BOYCE BROTHERS HERE!

We're not even sure there is anything to be repaired. Maybe they just don't fancy it anymore, for their own, non-disagreement-with-other-Board-members reasons?

100 Years Since World War 1 began

Ahahaha, Alpine Joe, noted religious zealot, reads the Wail and presumably refers to it as Broken Britain. Magnificent stuff.

Per Harry Patch:

"I felt then as I feel now, that the politicians who took us to war should have been given the guns and told to settle their differences themselves, instead of organising nothing better than legalised mass murder."

What bothers me is that history expels the most important figure ever. Forget Jesus, who didn't exist. Forget Hitler, who was little more than a by-product, forget Chairman Mao and all those others. The most important man in the entirety of human history is Gavrilo Princip, the man who caused the first world war. A list of the things we wouldn't have without him includes, but is very much not limited to:

Precision engineering (so we'd have basically none of the things that we have today which require any sort of even vaguely accurate machining)
Computers
Jet engines
Street lighting
Nuclear power
Anaesthetic
Laparoscopic surgery (I'll concede that we would have had surgery, which we'd had for over 200 years at St Thomas' prior to the war)
RADAR
SONAR
Television
Wireless
Infra red signal
Telephones
Equal rights
James Bond
Modern mining, tunnelling and demolition

And about a billion other things. Have a think about some of the things on that list. Computers, I'm not just talking about laptops, I'm talking about the silicone chip. Everything from mobile phones to televisions to cars to large scale engineering to everything else. Were it not for Princip, we'd still be hacking about with a Babbage Difference Engine to work out maths problems. Have a look at those mock ups of what the early industrial revolution was like in places like Telford. That's what 21st Century [Broken] Britain would look like without Princip. The effect the man has had on the course of human development is impossible to overstate. His contribution dwarfs that of Churchill, Nixon, Henry Tudor, Brunel, Obama, Gandhi, Elizabeth Windsor and basically everyone else put together.
Most people affect the world in one sphere. Thomas Andrew, chief designer of the Titanic has, indirectly, saved the lives of tens of thousands of people and kept a similar number gainfully employed by his failure to genuinely design an unsinkable ship. Pythagoras has changed the way mathematicians and physicists think. Plato and Socrates expanded the minds of millions with their deep thought. It is almost certain that the decision made by Princip on that June day in 1914 to have a coffee after failing in his first attempt to commit murder instead of going home as he had planned, has indirectly affected every person who has lived since. Literally every person on the planet who has lived even a portion of their lives since 28/06/1914 has, in some way, had their life influenced by Princip and the ripple of what he brought about will affect every human who lives between now and the end of the race/planet, whichever is sooner.

And that makes me feel very, very small indeed.

A) Libel doesn't exist anymore
B) It is (and always has been) a defence to defamation to show that the comments made were true and/or fair comment.

Right all, I come as the bearer of bad news. As Bobby identifies, Jazz has left the team. She has her reasons for doing so, and as Matt and I remain both friends with Jazz and supporters of TULFC, neither of us is going to make any comment about that.

What I can say is that we are enormously grateful for the huge generosity shown by fellow Gulls. That so many of you were so willing to give freely of your hard earned really says a great deal about the human condition.

Matt is presently having a look at his online banking and identifying what, if any, information he will need from those who have already donated in order to process refunds. He's absolutely happy to withdraw cash and hand it over directly if users would rather not give out their bank details. He does ask that, if you wish to take advantage of this offer, that you PM me (not him, he's banned for not being a racist) with your real name and bring with you some sort of ID (it sounds extreme, but it'll save us all a load of heartache if some unscrupulous bastard pulls a fast one). We'll be at the Welling match and can make ourselves available a short while before kick off.

I am sorry this has turned into such a clusterfuck. It's a real shame, because we were doing really well, and, with Russian's fiver, we stood to break the £200 barrier.

For what it's worth, special thanks (I'm REALLY sorry if I miss anybody, I'm going by memory because of Matt's ban) go to (in no special order):

Wonderland
Bobby93
RussianGull
LexusGuy
Ben Currie (Can't remember his username)
TaxiLady
GoodLuck Gull
Brooker
Gulliball
NJGull
Kernow
Behind-the-Gulls and...
Matt's mate Pete (who wouldn't know a computer if he tripped over it, so isn't on the forum)

You're all part of the solution, rather than being part of the problem. You should all be pleased that you have been removed from Matt's "idiot" list - a rare feat.

Please do contact me via PM to arrange your refunds.

Pea.
