Starting XI Vs Welling
If Yeoman isn't fit, then Duane must start. It'll make is one dimensional, but that's better than no-dimensional Benyon.
We're at home, it's the second match of the season and, with appropriate deference to the visitors, we're playing **** Welling. Welling, for Christ's sake! We've got to go at this as though a 5-0 victory will save the club from liquidation. We have no right to win games (we're Torquay, let's not forget that), but we have the personnel to steamroller sides like Welling. Our side is (is!) a class above that of our visitors. Do the basics well, play at suitable intensity and we will, by default, win the match. Go beyond that and apply some skill and real professionalism and we could secure a four goal+ haul and a clean sheet.
Fail to turn up and we could be beaten by a glorified pub side of plumbers and brickies.

Paul Buckle at New York City
Every TUFC player I've spoken to about Bucks happily recalls that he one of the best coaches in the business. Knows football inside out and can fashion a good side out of absolutely nothing... For about a week, until players get sick of his horrible personality. He's just got no people skills whatsoever, a total social retard. Can't engender respect, can't speak to people appropriately, can't do anything except coach football.
Interestingly, the absolute opposite is true of Ling, of whom it is frequently said he's one of the least knowledgeable men in football, but boy-oh-boy, can he make people feel good about themselves.
We've seen each approach being both success and failure. I guess the key is a moderation of both. Helpfully, I know that Chris already had the Ling half, here's hoping he can develop the Buckle half, and quick.

If it's true.
To those who doubt it when I say that talent will only take you so far and that the rest is down to factors outside your control, I give you this situation. Comfortably good enough to play in the Premier League, he can't get a kick for any team in England. Tell me again how Ajala must be a pub player because he didn't get into the Welling side last year...

A grown up has arrived. Thank ****.forevertufc wrote:Get exactly what SBP is saying here, fair thread. For a start some of our transfer listed players are not on the list because CH doesn't like them, or think they're not up to the standard, they're on the list because of their wages being to high, to simply dismiss these players as being sh*t is wide of the mark, and anyone can do that. Why did Torquay lose Saturday, cause we we're sh*t, see.
In answer to SBP, I've used the word mentality a few times over the weekend, and it's true, mentality plays a massive part in team/individual sports, and from listening to the game, watching those brief highlights and reading match reports (agreed there is a time for an extra midfielder and Saturday was probably it) but it also seems if the team has allowed Gateshead to beat on them some what as well.
Just because we've gone down a league, doesn't mean I/we should expect to steamroller teams, win all our games, and dominate possession in our games, that isn't going to happen, we have to pay due respect to all the teams in this league, none will give us an easy ride.
What sort of performance do I want to see. with out the ball I want to see the team competing and working to get it back, with the ball I want to see us constantly asking questions of the opposition team, and looking like we've got a goal or two in us, if we're doing that, come win, draw or defeat they'll get a round of applause from me, and due credit.

The Gulls v Gateshead (away) 9 August 2014
It is pie in the sky, but no more so than all the other compete rubbish on this thread about our whole team being the worst group of players football has ever seen, on the basis, sight unseen by either complainant, we lost one game, away from home, to (officially) the best side remaining in the division.
Ironically, if we beat Welling 5-0, they'll be among the very first to start telling us not to get carried away based on one game. Bearing in mind that we got the same noises from the same posters when our team included the likes of O'Kane and Olejnik, it all starts to become a waste of time reading and it's definitely a waste of time writing it.

You're apportioning credit (or blame) where none is due. We were relegated in spite of Jesus, not because of him.

We play plenty of games in the Bristol area this season, you should be able to get along to one fairly close to you. It's hardly like watching Brasil, but there're usually goals, a convivial atmosphere and a chance to oggle some pretty ladies.

Three Central Midfielders?
So, one game and some second hand opinions, not really a stronger case, if I'm honest.
Give it 10 games against a variety of opponents and then we can draw some meaningful conclusions. We might have just lost 3-1 away (and missed a pen) against a side that gets 120 points this season and breaks all sorts of records. We might look back on that game and think we did really well, given that everyone else lost 6-0. If we go to town on Welling and beat them 4-0 with exactly the same side as played at Gateshead, then what, suddenly we'll have the best midfield in the division? No, of course not. Let's give the team a fair crack of the whip before we start chopping and changing things around and/or writing off a whole squad as "not very good".

Three Central Midfielders?
This is the trouble with basing wide ranging and long term opinions on one game. If you'd have seen us against Exeter, you'd have a totally different view.JamieE wrote:I only saw one pre-season friendly this year and that was against Weymouth and it was clear from that performance we are not good enough to go out with two strikers and try and dominate games because we aren't very good!
Our full backs are poor, our centre halves are so slow, our midfielders are non-existent with no creativity, we have too many ineffective strikers and we still have Martin Rice in goal. You can't expect this team to be performing to a level where we are going to Gateshead and winning, they aren't good enough.
Hargreaves' signings have been fine and his hands are tied as to who he plays at the minute but what he is doing with the squad is naive. Our defence are individually poor but they're going to be exposed by a shape whereby we have two attacking wingers and a young midfielder alongside a hopeless journeyman - absolutely no cover. Playing Young in a two man midfield with Harding is like playing a young Eunan O'Kane with Chris McPhee. And all this to accommodate a second striker who at the minute is either Elliot Benyon or Ashley Yeoman, neither will score more than 5 goals each.
Courtney Richards needs to come into midfield and provide some bite and cover to a poor defence. We will continue to be so open and woeful until this happens. It may not be what fans want to hear or see but we need to be able to compete and scrap. If we go out and beat Welling 1-0 on Tuesday playing the same team, nothing will have changed. Playing 3 in midfield doesn't necessarily mean you are any less attacking, it can allow you to compete, dominate a game more and allow our wingers, clearly the best part of our squad, to express themselves.
I don't think 4-5-1 (maybe more 4-4-1-1) is a bad idea necessarily. It'll allow us to have Ajala on the pitch. He does everything better than everyone else, so he'll add passing, tackling and attacking intent. Quite why you'd not play him when you've got him available is a mystery to me. Same with Ives. To quote an old advert, why have cotton when you can have silk?
