Can We Make the Play Offs?

This, this is what I have said all along. Our best spell last season was when we used the width and had two half decent players we could utilise down the wings. Of all the players that left this is what we have badly missed and where we have been lacking most this season.

Expectations

Absolutely no expectations whatsoever. We punched well above our weight last season and got lucky on many occasion. The injury situation was unfortunate but it seems to happen to us a lot. Two years running we had 10+ players laid up. From the moment Matt Buse missed his penalty in the PO final I had a feeling of dread that our chance has gone, can't see us ever getting out of this league, we gave ourselves a golden chance and blew it. We won't be among the top boys this season I fear. Hope im proved wrong. Pessimistic I know but that's what 34 years of supporting TUFC will do to you.

Transfer talk.

Well yesterday there was rumour going around that Bradford City had no interest in signing. Ben Whitfield. Who to believe?

Playoff Final Vs Hartlepool at Ashton Gate

gullsgullsgulls wrote: 15 Jun 2021, 17:52 This is not true. You have to cancel at any time before the end of your first month.
If you are able to have the monthly pass then yes this is right but I took out the 31 day rolling contract which requires 31 days notice to cancel. Its easy to order but a pain in the ass to cancel.

Playoff Final Vs Hartlepool at Ashton Gate

Yeah, me too. But you have to cancel it the day after you order or you will get billed for two months.

Tracing a friendly game in the early 90’s!

Looks likely he was playing for Burnley as he went Scarborough after that. We didn't have friendlies with Scarborough around that time. Just hammered them in playoffs.

FA Cup 1st Round Draw - Who do you want?

Yeah,I was at that game too Wivel. I was stood by the barrier by the canteen when Tommy scored and flicked the v towards the directors box. It was just days earlier he requested to leave. Cant quite remember why Dave Smith left though. Think it was similar to Cyril just before, a dip in results and the manager left exclaiming he couldnt do any more with this team or take it further. I know the season ended up with promotion but I wished Dave Smith had stayed because he had us playing some great football. Until the injuries hit we were unbeaten and top of the league. I reckon we would have been better equipped for the league above with him at the helm.

I went to the first game

That was awesome, apart from the result. I remember wearing that kit for a TUFC u16 team. Tommy Tynan, what a finisher. That season was a real rollercoaster but with a joyous end. Mike Bateson took over in the summer, we had our best ever start to the season, but had a few injuries that impacted our form. Losing Paul Smith was huge, wasnt that also the season Phil Lloyd broke his leg, at Maidstone in the league if memories correct. Tynan requested to leave in the second half of the season, even though he was still scoring when he played, Dave Smith left (gutted), we stuttered over the line to get into the playoffs, then the rest is folklore and beautiful history. Tynan was dropped for the final amid rumours of a bust up with captain Wes Saunders, Saunders had a bad cut supposedly caused by a whack on the head with a kettle. Hence the renditions of "Tommy put the kettle on."

Where’s the Bard

When I see the title I thought it was about Dave Smith - manager 89-91. The Bard of plainmoor was a bit of a nickname he was given because he quoted phrases and gave the players sheets of literature and poetry to read. There was even a t shirt of him mocked up like Shakespeare, with quotes in the background.

Calling London Torquay fans who play...

Hi Zebgull, nothing to do with this post but I played in the game you organised a few years back at Plainmoor. Just wondering on the off chance as we had a chat about it at the time but do you have any of the pictures or footage of that game you could send please. There was talk of a dvd of the game, that would be amazing and would gladly pay any costs required via paypal or something. It was a great day and dream come true for a few of us.

Many thanks.

MOTM - Eastbourne

Vincent - Bossed the game
Lemonheigh Evans - Tries to play the game in the right way.
Wynter - So comfortable on the ball, improved loads
Davis - A great outlet
Andrews - Again tries to play, very intelligent, would have been motm but final ball was poor yesterday

Best Ever Day?

Its definitely up there. For many its probably Southend 04. I missed that one because I couldnt stomach it after Orient 98 and I was convinced Huddersfield would win their game.

For me personally its play off 91 v Blackpool but yesterday comes second. The fact that we won a league and it actually happened at Plainmoor was huge. Yes we have been to wembley in a cup final and won a conference play off final but other than a few cup upsets when have we had such a huge achievement happen at Plainmoor, I cant think of any in my 32 years of following. My first ever game, 87 vs Crewe was probably still the greatest scenes I have seen at our ground and will always be most memorable but for achievement yesterday was the best day there.

Torquay United v Eastbourne Borough 13/4/19

gateman49 wrote: 13 Apr 2019, 19:45 Hi Chunkygull,

On a day of celebrations, I'm not sure what farce there was at the turnstiles as I thought that things went reasonably smoothly (far better than Boxing Day). If you are referring to the limit on paying entrants we'd been given an allocation of paper tickets as the balance after all the pre match sales had only left a few spaces left. The pop side was limited to what ever number the safety people dictate and we were stuck with that.

We sold out at about 2.30 if my memory is right but we were still letting season ticket and prebooked ticket holders in until the normal time.

I'm sorry that you were caught by these limits but I suppose that the answer is to buy now for Hungerford if you want to guarantee a place in the pop side.
In fairness Gateman after your reply I must say it wasnt so much the turnstiles that were a farce, it was the organisation getting a ticket. There were people ready to go in and suddenly just before 2.30 the security guys said we couldnt go in without getting a ticket, no cash would be accepted at the turnstile, we had to go to reception and get a ticket. I appreciate the fact tickets were for sale all week, online we were told to get in early, 2.30 is reasonable for Plainmoor, also we were told we could pay at the gate. I do understand why it switched to ticket only though.

The main problems were that there was a mad rush from pop turnstiles to reception then a massive queue, just a window open with one person serving, some had been told cash only so they ran off to a cashpoint only to be told on return it was pay by card and no cash. There were a lot of people in the queue who had paid online and were just collecting, the process was painfully slow, it really needed two points open, one for collections and one for buying . There were a lot of people who werent sure whether they could make the game until yesterday, some not until late in the day, myself included. Thats always going to happen. Anyway after a long wait the word spread that there were no tickets left, you could only get in with cash on the turnstile at the away end. I enjoyed it in the away end to be honest, hope we get to do that again. It was clearly obvious though that the pop was not full.
Like I said, only thing that tainted the day for me was not watching the game on the pop with my dad, however after all the numptys ran on the pitch I made my way to the pop and found him (no I didnt go on the pitch), just in time to get the confirmation of the Woking score, so we had the most important moment.
