Stockport County v Torquay United 28/9/19

Poor ol' Culmstockgull has taken some 'stick' on here following yesterday's match. In his defence, whilst I do not agree with his views, I bet anyone who had predicted that we would be 4 - 0 up away to Stockport by half time would have been called a buffoon! That's the frustration of this game we love, and especially TUFC - it's so unpredictable. I was very critical of Rhys Murphy when he was with us, but he scored over 20 goals for Chelmsford last season and now he's getting a few for Yeovil as they move up the table.

Unexpected result after the last two home games so let's hope this is the start of a decent run of results. Another good post by Forever, by the way. Thank goodness for some sanity on the Forum!

Earlier in the season Mcdonald, Niate, Cameron,Duku and Keating came in for some dreadful stick and on a regular basis from any number of contributors on this forum. I didn't see too many of you sticking your heads over the parapet to defend them. But then the Reidy protection society comes out in force when someone disagrees with the theory that he fell to earth to save Torquay.
Different people, different views.
The difference, as Forever eluded to in his reasoned post, is that last season we had Saiko Janneh playing alongside Jamie Reid and they complemented each other well. This season, Manny Duku has been brought in to partner Reid and to be frank, so far he has not impressed. Reid is out there on his own, battling against some rugged defenders, yet he is still the league's joint leading scorer.

Joe Quigley scored twice for Dagenham & Redbridge in their 3 - 1 home win which takes them into the play off places. I thought he looked a good prospect when he was on loan at Plainmoor, but looking at his playing career, he has played for numerous clubs on loan so something not quite right with his attitude maybe? It will be interesting to see how he plays against us on Saturday.

Also, Nathan Smith scored the goal in Port Vale's 1 - 0 win over Argyle. Ho, hum ......

Torquay United v Harrogate Town 7/9/19

forevertufc wrote: 08 Sep 2019, 12:53 The referee not to many complaints there, the key decisions think he got right, the Davis booking for diving rather than an award for a penalty, you just have to look at the reaction of Davis, and our team, Davis himself didn't put up much of a protest, the rest the no protest what so ever, they knew the ref was right, as for the Harrogate penalty think it was Cundy ( maybe wrong) his hands were on the back of their player, he's going down, more often than not, it's going to be given, apart from some cheap yellow cards, and some inconsistency on what was judged to be, or not to be a foul (normal) didn't think the referee was that bad.

For me sorry, but just have to be honest, nothing personal but Naite is a gord darn walking liability of a centre back at this level, can't see him getting back into the team for a while, Still like Cameron, seems to be having a his own personal confidence battle at the moment, but think he's got the potential to go on, sadly unlike Naite who seems to be a step above his level, Lucas Colovan seems to be gaining in confidence with every game, great to see him start to come a claim crosses, and gives us fans greater confidence to see the keeper hold to everything that comes his way.
Maybe I'm going soft in my old age, but I would say Harrogate, like Hartlepool last week, were a street-wise side and although I agree that the ref got the key decisions right (although Jon Stead's sending off was very harsh), there were many shoves, tugs etc he let go. Also, the booking of Frankie Vincent was ridiculous. I thought the ref was poor, but perhaps not quite as bad as last week's ref. I don't like criticising refs, but I thought those two were poor.

There has been some criticism of kyle Cameron for their second goal. It's hard to judge from where I was standing (on the halfway line) and I haven't watched the playback, but my first thought was that Covolan should have come for the cross and maybe Cameron expected him to do so. Kyle then got caught with the experienced Stead coming in behind. Apart from that 'blip', I thought Cameron had a very good game.

I very much disagree with Culmstock that fans are staying away because we are not playing consistently good football, or because the chips are £3. This is a much tougher league and we are not going to win every week, but I don't think any of us can complain about the entertainment value. One factor for the lower gate could be that the local sides started their season last week, so that might have knocked a hundred or two off the gate.

MOTM - Harrogate Town

Ben Wynter - solid in defence and involved in the build up to two, maybe three, of the goals
Kalvin Kalala - changed the game when he came on. Great strike for his goal. If only he could play with consistency every week
Jamie Reid - battled hard virtually on his own up front against some uncompromising defenders which the ref let get away with too much
Frank Vincent - a skillful 90 minute performance from young Frankie.
Ben Whitfield - is already proving a useful addition to the squad. Well done, Gary Johnson.

Difficult to leave out Jake Andrews and Mr Consistency, Liam Davis. I think this was Robert Cundy's first game of the season (he hasn't had any game time with Exeter). He will also be a useful addition to the squad. I can see why Bristol City signed him from Bath.

Torquay United v Harrogate Town 7/9/19

Couldn't understand why we constantly played the long high ball in the first half which was meat and drink to the Harrogate defenders. I think Kalala's introduction in the second half changed the game more than Stead's sending off, although it was good to see him go. For Harrogate, read Hartlepool. Another very physical side and another weak referee who let a lot go. If these last two home games are anything to go by, it's going to be a bruising season.

Some very good performances this afternoon, notably Kalala, Wynter (my MOM), Whitfield, Davis and Vincent. Good distribution from Covolan as well.

Not good news, but I'm sure he will take the positives from the likes of Chris Todd who have come through cancer treatment. However, having been through chemo/radiotherapy myself, the next few months will not be easy for Angus. To him, and anyone else going through it, the best advice I was given was to STAY POSITIVE (although not easy at times)

I think you're right. That was one decision the linesman did get right. Actually, in that 10 minute clip we didn't look too bad. Shame about the other 84 minutes, although overall I feel there will be days when we play worse than we did on Saturday and win.

Bristol_Gull wrote: 31 Aug 2019, 18:06 I think some of are problems stem from trying to shoehorn Hall, Little and CLE into the side - I understand why you would want to but it’s simply not working.
I agree with this. I think this is the root of the problem. We have Hall, Lemonheigh-Evans, Little, Andrews and young Frank Vincent - all good midfield players, but only Manny Duku to partner Reid upfront. But from what I've seen of him so far, I don't think he's going to set the world alight. We have a team of young players and it is probably proving to be a bit of a culture shock for some of them this season after playing mainly part-timers last season.

My thoughts on yesterday's game were that 'pool were more street-wise than we are and the ref allowed them to get away with far more than most refs would. He was weak and the linesman on the Pop Side was, frankly, very poor. I wasn't in line for their second goal, but from where I was standing, it looked to be yards offside in the build up to the goal. Having said that, 'pool put us under the cosh in the first half and we were fortunate to be only 1 - 0 down at half time. We will be okay, but I think we need an experienced central defender and striker if we are going to challenge for a play-off place. I think Gary Johnson would have learned a lot from Saturday's game.

wodger of awabia wrote: 29 Aug 2019, 16:48 If all of the 92 league and prem. clubs paid 1% of their gate money into a central fund, and then split the fund 92 ways at the end of the season, it might help. Man.City, United, Liverpool etc. would hardly notice the difference.
An interesting concept, Wodger. When I first read your post, I must admit I thought 'what a daft idea'. But on second thoughts, there is a lot of sense in it. Problem is - EFL/FA aren't well known for sense. Would 'gate money' include season ticket sales and tickets bought online? it would be a nightmare to administer, and I'm sure some clubs would find 'loopholes' to avoid paying 1%. But I do think more money should filter down from the Premier League to lower league clubs. Perhaps the plight of Bury and Bolton will concentrate a few minds ....... until the next club 'hits the buffers'.

brucie wrote: 27 Aug 2019, 22:13 Playing the way we do with an attacking game we are always going to be slightly vulnerable defensively - as has been said you can't have it all ways.
I agree with Brucie ...... ;-)

No Culmstock - I think I go back further than you - even further back than Wivel. Yes - I well remember John Benson. Great player. But before him, I remember Dennis Lewis who was a midfield player (wing half in those days) who was a tough tackler.
