Braintree v Torquay mon 29th
Just looked at last season's results, we didn't get our third win until 10 October, game 16. And win 4 until game 25, 26 December. We didn't have 2 consecutive wins until February. So it's been a good weekend!!
Need to keep this momentum going. Half tempted to drive down on Saturday.

Who will succeed Angus as Captain?
Whilst I am not sure it's the decision I would have made, you cannot argue with that very intelligent and well thought out endorsement by Nicho. He has clearly thought it out and I've never seen a Captain announcement given so much much detail. For all that's wrong with the club, we really do seem to have a very very good, smart and thoughtful manager.AlexGulls wrote:Confirmed on OS that Richards is captain with Aman Verma as vice captain.
He got an awful lot of stick for the boxes he ticked, but it seems he really does know an awful lot, and seemingly has a lot of contacts to boot!

Cash injection needed
I have to say that this is a very well put argument. It would be interesting to know the stats, although I don't suppose it's possible to get them, but that 1800 average last season would not have been the same 1800 at each game. For example, my old man goes once a month, I went 6 times last season. I'd say my dad is reasonably regular, but on the 2 to 3 times he doesn't go a month, somebody else goes who wasn't there when he did. I'd wager that although we can say we have a hard-core of 1800, that hard-core is not made up of 1800 individuals. I'd class myself as reasonably hard-core, considering I live over 100 miles away and have never lived closer than an hour away. If our average next season is 1800 then probably 1000 of those will be paying on the gate, 200plus will have a season ticket but not be there, then our paying on the gate crowd will still be bigger than many of our competitors total crowd. Surely that is enough to run the club and be competitive at this level when you factor in Sponsorship and franchises etc?Gulliball wrote: For some people we'll earn less than they might otherwise have been prepared to spend, but we only had circa 400 season ticket holders last season and have jumped from that figure to over 1000.
To use my dad as an example, he's been going to Plainmoor for 20 odd years, without ever having a season ticket. He usually goes to somewhere around 18 odd home games a season so it's not worthwhile to him. In the last few years I've noticed that he's been missing more and more games, even when he was able to attend, as the motivation to go just wasn't there. He's bought a season ticket for this year, and will probably attend a lot more games next year as a result. If next season continues as recent years have, and we end up with several Tuesday night fixtures again, then £200 might very easily be more than he would otherwise have spent. At the very least it's filling Plainmoor a lot more each week and this has knock on effects in terms of programmes, food and drink sales etc. It also in turn encourages more people to attend (for example my mum and brother are going to the game tonight and are much more likely to go to a game next season if my dad's there).
With 1000 season tickets, we're not going to have crowds of 1100 and 1200 as we've had in recent years. The die hard fans who have a £200 season ticket will likely contribute to the TUST and/or players fund and from the others you have a £200 commitment from them, which will likely average out at not that far off what would have spent, with the benefit of having them inside the ground more often. After 4 years of decline, getting fans into Plainmoor and experiencing the Nicholson feel good factor can only be a good thing. For the concession rate season tickets, these are the fans of the next 50 years, and along with the magnificent community initiatives we've seen this pre-season, is what gives us a future as a community based small local club.
Overall, I don't think they're going to be a disaster and may well help us to turn the corner from a club in decline to a positive, community engaging club.

Neal Osborne. Signed a 2 year Scholarship in 2015 and has been in their under 18 squad all season, although mainly as an unused sub.tomogull wrote: I know this is straying a long way off the theme of this thread, but Philgull's post made me think. Nope, we are mathematically safe if we win, as BW play Guiseley next week, and both need to win 2 games to overtake us, which is not possible as they play each other.Orange Gull wrote:Boreham Wood 2-1 up. Even if we win this, we still aren't mathematically safe after today.
So unless Guiseley get back in to their game, we are safe

That was really good I thought. I took a mate from work who is a Geordie and he was really impressed with both the quality and the atmosphere. When the second went in, it went nuts. Was a bit nervy until we got the second but anything other than a win would have been a travesty. I thought everyone played at least decent, although Ajala wasted so much possession, but it was really solid most of the time with some lovely football at times, and the squad are so together. Delighted I went.
The Chester fans were abysmal, why would you travel all that way to not sing one song?
Great work Nicho!!

United travelled to Oxford for a live TV match (good ol' Setanta!) relatively early on in our first season out of the Football League. We had already been on TV once in a 3-1 defeat at Burton, and this match looked like going in a similar way. Oxford were 3-0 up at half time as Eddie Hutchinson first scored, before Yemi Odubade added two more. Paul Buckle made some changes to his side, and substitute Ishmael Welsh got us on the scoresheet just before the hour. With 10 minutes to go, Chris Zebroski scored to make it an edgy ending. 90th minute saw United counter attack and Tim Sills powered home to level the game! True drama. I wasn't there but I remember being incredibly close to turning it off at HT. Certainly one that I wish I had gone to!

The final day of the 1997/98 campaign is next up. United travelled to London to face Leyton Orient - I believe a win would have seen the club automatically promoted to Division 2? We were contending with Lincoln for the final automatic promotion spot. The game did not go well. Inside 6 minutes, Orient were ahead through a penalty converted by Dean Smith. Craig Maskell added a second in the 24th minute. United eventually pulled one back with 13 minutes to go, but then all hope of a comeback was ended when goalkeeper Kenny Veysey got sent off in the 86th minute. This result, coupled with Lincoln's victory, meant the Imps enjoyed automatic promotion at our expense.
The Orient game. Oh the Orient game. We actually only needed a draw for auto promotion, and despite Vesey getting sent off, it wasn't quite over. A last minute goal mouth scramble saw Alex Watson and Andy MacFarlane have chances. I think Watson hit the bar. I have never seen so much confetti at a game!!! I don't know how many gulls were there, but the away terrace was defo over capacity. I barely touched the floor all game. When we almost scored the equaliser in the last minute, the crowd swayed like I've never experienced. So close to an incredible celebration!!!

Sheffield Wednesday away was a cracking day out. Shame we couldn't hold on (that would have also seen us safe, ultimately!) But we had a really good following that day and the atmosphere was cracking. Certainly the biggest attendance for a league game since I've been following the gulls. That was my favourite season I think, despite the disappointment if the last game.
