Torquay United v Aveley F C Saturday 24 Feb KO 3pm

OK just bought a ticket for the pop side for this afternoon’s game - As it’s 8.15pm here in Queensland Australia I have NO chance of getting to the game….. If someone PM’s me in the next hour, I’ll happily send them the email confirmation and they can enjoy the game for me. As a kid that grew up around Plainmoor in the late sixties early seventies, I have some fantastic memories of not only playing football on the “cabbage patch” at plainmoor before the pool was built. Playing behind the mini stand on the tarmac before it became the boots and laces and actually playing on the “hallowed turf” of plainmoor itself with Torre Trojans and Homelands Tech! Too many great times to recall, I just want to see TUFC get back to former glories - even it’s from the other side of the world!

Gulls abroad

As the name would suggest another Aussie gull fan, been here for 11 years. Prior to that lived in Wigan, Warminster and Frampton Cotterell (just north of M4/M5 interchange) I was back over at Xmas but didn't get to the FGR games as in Cardiff visiting family. Used to get back 3 or 4 times a year as worked for a wine company (not now) last games I got to were the season were we beat Argyle with that Euan "special" and the end of that season (or was it the season after) when we drew 3 - 3 with Bristol Rovers (?).

Grew up in and around Plainmoor as my gran lived in St Paul's Road. Used to play football on the "cabbage patch" before they built the Plainmoor pool on it. A former Torre Trojan - u13 through to U16's - best times were when the mini stand was built and in full force! Favourite player was Jimmy Dunne (and Mickey Cave) so really talking about 68 through to 74 (?)

When I came back for the Argyle game had my picture taken with Aaron Downes via Andrew Candy - not sure what happened to it though??

Whilst my mother still lives in Cary Park I try and get over a couple of times a year.

Still miss real beer, banter and Englishness (is there such a word?) don't miss the weather and general greyness of anywhere I visit... Keep the faith everyone, when I win the Aussie lottery I'll come back and buy the club!!

Ne plus ultra

Ah jumpers for goalposts! I think the Rising Sun used to be on the left hand side of St Paul's Road as you walked down from Plainmoor - at least there WAS a pub there about 50 metres up the road (on the other side) from the Union. I should know it as it was next door to my Grandma's house (she lived at No 7). Bit too young to remember the Rovers game and indeed the last game I got to was the Rovers game in 2013.....

Talking of local landmarks and that era, goes anyone remember the Cosy Cafe on St Marychurch Rd - at the top of Forest Rd? That's where all of the players used to gather for their cooked breakfasts after training!!! I can remember the likes of John Bond, Smithy, Ken Brown and Jimmy Dunne tucking into their grub with a fag for afters!!!

Miss Plainmoor, miss United but don't miss the weather.....

Re: The Old Codgers Club

Really dont want to be considered as an "Old Codger" as am still running half marathon's at a tad under 1hr 45 mins @53yrs of age - its all due to the weather in Aus!

However
a) Cowshed - definately, can remember picking up off the floor empty Vimto and Dawes "Dandilion & Burdock" bottles to return to the shop for a penny refund! "Scoop" (was that his name?) at the back of shed shout up up!

b) Yep, saw that great man play

c) Yep - First game 4 -2 v Walsall in 68/69 season - think we finished 6th in the third division

d) No, but used to stop off in Sammy Collins newsagents shop half way down forest road after a Saturday game to get a football "pink" - how did they ever manage to print the results so quickly after a game AND distribute the papers to a shop??

Other "famed" nostalgia of plainmoor? - Freddie King (fearsome groundsman - get off my bleedy pitch! he would shout at us all) the smell of linament whafting from the changing rooms, watching the Spurs 1970 game from halfway up the floodlight at the Marnham Road end and the construction of the "famed" Mini Stand................. ah jumpers for goalposts!

NB: Back on track - did get to the York game - what an abject performance from both the team and supporters - did someone die just before kick off? Never heard a ground so quiet!!

Re: Torquay United v York City - 5/10/13

Well, I'm going, back in the UK again, just the odd mile over 10,100....! (One way)

Not sure what to expect after reading the posts on here? If it's half as good as my last visit - 3 - 3 v Bristol Rovers last match, last season I'll be happy

Just checked into the hotel in Torquay, yep I might be back on business (again) and I don't have to drive to Torquay from London/Bristol, but I do cause it's Torquay, my home town team, and always will be, so everyone, get a grip, it's Torquay FFS what do you expect??

Oh, 3 - 2 to us, but don't ask me who will score

Re: Torquay Fans Demographic Poll

Born in Torquay (shrub lands - for those of a long memory). Lived in Upton initially, then moved to the top of Babbacombe, gran lived 150 yards from Plainmoor where I spent my formative years! Married and then lived in Newton Abbot then Kingsteinton before moving North to Manchester, then Warminster, Bath and North of Bristol (Frampton Cotterell - GlousterGull....posher than Yate!) moved to Adelaide in 2005 and been here since. Get back to Plainmoor at least once a season and looks like I'll be there for the York City game

I'll be there!

That's subject to my grovelling email reaching Andrew Candy.........?

I leave Adelaide local time Wednesday 10.30am and land at Thiefrow @ 05.30am Thursday morning. Meetings in Bristol (would you believe!) Thursday/Friday and driving down to TQ1 late Friday afternoon - 10,500 miles one way.........

May drop by the Boots & Laces and introduce myself to one and all?

Re: Bristol Rovers Tickets

Well,

I've just arranged to be in the UK on business from next Thursday onwards! That's a 10,500 mile journey (one way). I'd better e-mail Andrew Candy direct (like last season v the Gas heads and the Gargs two great matches 2-2 and 3-0, just need a similar result a week on Saturday!) funny to think when I watched the team beat Accrington 3-1 at the start of the season I'd be dreading this final game?) Anyway down to TQ1 on Friday evening, see me old mum in Cary Park - go for a run along the sea front Sat morning (assume weather is cold & crap) so skins for me and then up to the shop pick up my ticket and maybe meet a few of you in the B&L before the game??

More memories - buying a football "pink" after the game from Sammy Collins newsagents half way down Forest road,, Chips from Cryil's in Plainmoor (Robbie Brokenshire's dad). Late sixties seeing TUFC players in Cosy's Corner Cafe after training.... Collecting "vim to" bottles in the cowshed for the penny return on the glass bottles........ Ah jumpers for goalposts, which would bring me onto the Cabbge Patch outside Homelands Technical high!!!!

Re: Bristol Rovers Game

I'm hoping that it isn't all ticket! I'm just about to jump on a plane from Aus and land at Theathrow 06.30 hrs Monday morning, I'm in Bristol (can you believe it...)for most of the week before driving down to my mum's Friday night. I got back for the Plymuff game and had to e-mail Andrew Candy to get a ticket...... So can someone let me know? Happy to meet people in the Boots & Laces before hand a say hello! I thought that I'd do that before the Argyle game but my relations didn't make it in time
