Who?

Football managers certainly get better through periods of inactivity. Seems to have been completely forgotten how bad we were towards the end of Lings tenure.

Who?

It was wrong when Hargreaves was making noises about Knill's job, and it's wrong that Ling is doing it about Hargreaves.

As for who we should get, we need to forget about 'previous connections' and just give it to the best man for the job. Actually invite applications, and after interview decide who offers the best chance of success - not who has the most recognisable name, or who would be most popular. The next appointment could prove to be one of the most important this club has ever made. Because we're currently standing on the edge of a precipice. Make the wrong decision now, and we might be part-time and further down the pyramid by the time this manager is being relieved.

I think we have to look for a man with experience or knowledge of the level we're at (that is what served Bucks well - as well as shed loads of cash obviously). Maybe move away from the lower-league 'journey-men' managers we normally get linked with. Maybe think outside the box a bit. Perhaps there are some excellent young managers in the league or two below ours that none of us have heard of. It might be a name that initially fails to get pulses racing, but it might just work.

Who?

He was working under the kind of constraints that would have given our subsequent managers serious sleep issues.

You're right though, we should look elsewhere. We don't deserve him after that '10 minute fiasco'.

Who?

I'll pretend I didn't read that. Good doesn't begin to describe Sir Leroy.

Got us promoted automatically (with Roy Macs team blah, blah, blah). Got fired for failing to keep us up - despite there being virtually zero intent from above to make it happen.

He did it all on his own too. 'Signings' were the result of x-factor style summer trials. All our managers since have been blessed in comparison.

And the football was sublime. I don't recall seeing ANY team at League 2 level playing with the swagger that team did.

Yeah, he was no good.

Leroy of course. He should ALWAYS be manager. Preached football from the gods.

What's Gone Wrong

tommyg wrote:We all saw him as an integral player in the summer but his pre-season injury set him back. Hargreaves could hardly change the defence in those first 11 games. Pearce had to be patient and when he's been given chances he simply hasn't taken them. He wouldn't be in and out of the team if he played well. He's also been on the transfer list all season which may have affected Hargreaves' decision not to give him - or somebody like Downes - the captaincy. You can accuse Hargreaves of mis-managing certain players but I wouldn't include Pearce.
Take that point. But the whole team was playing much better then. We were dominating teams, as we still had something of an ex-league team aura. Teams were sitting back and hoping to take a point from us, early on. But as soon as teams got braver against us, our defence crumbled.

Most clubs, at whatever level, have players that when fit are in the side. And Pearce is one of the few that maybe warranted that kind of treatment at Plainmoor. It's perhaps not always wise to pick individuals based on the performance of a team. Pearce is a more relaible defender than either of the others.

What's Gone Wrong

tommyg wrote:The reason Pearce didn't start the season as first choice was because he wasn't match fit. We kept eight clean sheets in our first 11 games with Downes and Angus at the back. That has been our best partnership this season in defence. If Pearce is sulking because he didn't get the captaincy when he was never actually captain of the club then he needs to grow up.
I didn't suggest he's sulking because he wasn't given the captaincy. I said that in my opinion, he'd have been the right choice - on account of him being 'the last man standing' last season, and having all the attributes a captain should have. Instead, rather than being treated as in integral player, he's been treated like an unwanted extra. It's not inspiring.

What's Gone Wrong

At the end of last season, most of us doubted Pearce would even be here this season. He was head and shoulders above the rest last season, and it seemed inevitable he'd be poached by a league club. Having kept him, I felt sure he'd be given the captaincy, with the manager showing the faith in him he warranted. Instead he got cast aside for being 'one of Knill's boys'. By a distance our best defender, has become a bit-part player. And now, when the manager does need him, we're supposed to be surprised he looks like a shadow of his former self? You reap what you sow.

Goodbye Hargreaves

There has to be an element of realism here. Hargreaves won’t be sacked, because why would an outgoing owner/chairwoman, who has already given the club millions, pay more from her own pocket to get rid of him? He’s someone else’s problem now.

As for the idea he’ll resign. Football manager of Torquay United is his job. It provides him with a salary which enables him to put food on his family table. Why should he give that up just because things are going badly?

In an ideal world he’d make just such a grand gesture. His respect for TUFC and its supporters, would result in him making the ultimate sacrifice and walking away. But it’s nothing more than a romantic notion. We’re stuck with him until the new owners walk through the door and make their first big decision...

Happy Talk...

Fonda wrote:I assume Mr Hargreaves is aware that all out of contract players are free to sign for clubs now? It isn’t just ours that can go elsewhere – the doors do actually function in both directions. Or at least I assume they do. Perhaps that’s another area in which we’re cutting back. I mention it because seemingly whilst all around are increasing their bulging numbers, our depleted squad continues to be neglected.

Yet again, we’ll be the last to burst into action. Whilst our place in the League is gone, our role of picking up the left-over’s clearly isn’t. Don’t fret though – we’ll act quickly enough to offer some of the dross nobody else wanted, £20 a week more than they’d get stacking shelves in their local Tesco’s. If the club wanted to dispel any concerns that last season’s debacle was terminal, with this plan of total inactivity they’re going about it all wrong.

Don’t get me wrong though, this was always going to be a very different experience to our previous sabbatical in this division. As a club, we don’t have sufficient money, intent or belief to make our second stay a short one. Whilst we have a small squad again – that is where the similarities end. Last time we had a (relatively) large budget, a manager that knew the division intimately and a feel-good factor from the boardroom to the terraces. This season we have...none of those things.

We evidently don’t have a competitive budget. I don’t consider the manager a complete fool, I’m sure he’d like to be doing some business. But it looks increasingly like he can’t afford to compete for signings – even at this level. He’ll have to wait until the players he tries to sign have two options - sign for us or sign on. So the quality we’ll be getting is obvious.

The manager himself has done the square root of f-all to convince me he’s the man for the job. I certainly don’t advocate making changes until a manager has had sufficient time to prove one way or the other if he’s good enough. Hargreaves certainly hasn’t had that yet, but I didn’t see anything from him last season to convince me he’s got the tools. Hopefully he’s grown into the job over the summer. Time will tell on that.

As for a ‘feel-good factor’, I’ve personally never looked forward to a season less. It’ll take all my energy to get there for our first home game (But I will, because that’s what we do isn’t it?) But I won’t enjoy it. Of that I’m absolutely convinced. There isn’t the slightest buzz about a ‘new challenge’. We’re in a division which contains ex-league clubs with bigger support and better prospects than us, and ‘new money’ clubs that have no history, little support but bucket loads of cash. I console myself with the thought that there must be at least 4 or 5 clubs that don’t fit into either of those categories, and we’ll finish above them. Ultimately though, my guess is we’ll be closer to the bottom of the division next season than the top. And if we exit the ‘Skrill’ any time in the next 5 years, it’s much more likely to be down than up.

I’ll probably leave it there. Too much positivity makes me giddy. See you again in September for more happy thoughts. Up the Gulls!
Just an update. Still feeling ‘stupid’, ‘dumb’, and ‘pessimistic’ for this post. Not that I hold grudges of course...

Unfortunately for all of us (especially those that live locally), the fate of Torquay United reflects almost exactly that of Torquay (the town). Historic lack of vision and investment has reduced it to a crumbling shell, with virtually no redeeming features. Anyone with a degree of ambition leaves Torquay at the earliest opportunity, there is nothing for them here. And I’m afraid the football team has long since been left behind too. Money makes the world go around. Only when Torquay (the town) starts looking for, and embracing private investment rather than rejecting it, will the businesses already in the town, flourish again. Dying town, dying football club.

WTF is going on

He was sacked because we were on a clear and decisive downward spiral. Knill didn't improve things and nor has Hargreaves. Circumstances within the club clearly didn't help any of them, but none of the 3 covered themselves in any glory.

Unfortunately so. Hence me specifically saying he's had no 'tangible POSITIVE effect' on any of them...
