Torquay United Association Football Club - Sole Director Clarke Osborne

MellowYellow wrote: 25 Jan 2018, 02:07 Any planning put forward to the council for a new stadium, I expect, would be very similar to Scarborough Athletic Football Clubs £15 million, 2,000 seat stadium & leisure development. The clients there are Scarborough Council although some of the funding was raised with a bit of land swapping with the council and the developers. For Scarborough it is great as it means that after ten years, the town can get its club back again! However, given that Scarbroughs 2,000 seat stadium tallied up to £15 million and Forest Green Rover have unveiled plans for 5,000 seat sports stadium at a cost of £100m just how much will a 6,000 stadium at Nightingale Park cost with a train station, acres of car parking space for a lower support base and leisure facilities for the whole of the Torbay Community . It beggers belief to think CO is actually going to fund any proposal put forward to the council. From my perspective I can now see why Osborne is seen as a wrecking ball with a history of razing stadiums on the promise of building replacements that never materialise.

Minor pedantry alert, but the proposed railway station isn’t technically part of any proposed development at Nightingale Park. it’s a project that (to some levels) stands on its own two feet, but the business case for both developments improves if the other comes to fruition.

The railway station fell short of winning a chunk of Network Rails new station fund - probably not helped as its business case being compromised by the NIMBY-ism of the local residents refusing the plans for car parking on what is effectively currently a grass verge on the old Newton Road. A slightly short-sighted blockade, as surely house prices in that area would have been boosted by having that direct transport link to Exeter etc.

So as it stands the station is on the back-burner as the funding isn’t in place for it. Whether CO as a private investor would stump up the shortfall to improve his own development projects is another matter

This is a small seaside club in an isolated geographical position. The club would have to gain another 3 promotions in order to get where Torquay are.

Scarborough are a club on the up with a secure future under steady fan ownership whilst Torquay.................

WE NEED A PHOENIX CLUB!!
In order to give the people of Torquay two clubs not to support, rather than just the one?

I’m truly staggered that it has got to this stage, as the games I saw early in GO’s tenure were pointing in the right direction. After Ebbsfleet, I couldn’t see a way we could possibly get relegated playing like that. Quite how a management team can lose their way so spectacularly I don’t know.

Can’t see GO leaving though, unless Osborne suddenly grows some balls and a backbone. The fawning over Nico is pure lunacy though - he laid the foundations for this sh*tshow with his abysmal summer recruitment

Just watched the highlights.

Shocking first goal. Never a penalty. In between times some reasonable chances created but nobody to finish

Yorkieandy wrote: 14 Jan 2018, 10:04 Ryan Brunt from Exeter. Said it before. Surely something can be sorted with both clubs as a bit of goodwill and on a short term loan until the end of the season. He's in the area already and doesn't get a look in at Exeter.

Has Owers ever even heard of the lad?

It's a no brainer for me and i'm sure something can be done to get him down to Plainmoor for 4 months. He's made 1 appearance for the Greeks. He's a big lad, physical, holds it up, brings others in, a real handful at set pieces and scores now and again. Does Owers even speak with managers of other local clubs to build links?
Andy - we’ve covered this before. Brunt hasn’t played a minute of football since August, and if you read the most recent interview with him (albeit from back in September) talks about Exeter letting him take his time with his rehab from a serious knee injury.

No football in 5 months suggests there is a bigger story than just not getting a look in. I dare say that the scenario is nowhere near as simple as you are making out.

(Would love to be proved wrong though as Brunt would fit the bill perfectly)

merse btpir wrote: 12 Jan 2018, 17:41 I wouldn't take it as read that Billericay will win the league just because of their inordinately bigger playing budget (rumoured to be in excess of £35,000 per week compared to Hamlet's newly pruned £5000 per week.........the wheels could come off the Billericay bus anytime with such extravagant funding and more than likely will.

I've seen Glenn Tamplin described as a 'steel magnate' but having known of him for nearly thirty years I can tell you he is a steel (scaffolding and RSJs; beams and posts) stockholder but more significantly has made a lot of money from property speculation and development.

He is quite genuine but a fruit loop ~ OCD, born again Christian and habitual social evangelist. He 'co-manages' the side becasue he can't let himself just be the owner; he has a fine manager in Harry Wheeler but has to be in the technical area putting in his two penneth worth. His previous manager Craig Edwards (as old school as they come) was having none of that and walked out a fortnight after Glenn walked in.....no falling out; just wasn't having it!

Hamlet are in trouble throught their developer/ground owners blackmailinig the local authority ~ LB of Soutwark ~ into dropping affordable housing quotas on the planned for re-development of their ground by starving the club they agreed to fund as leverage to get the property deal (familiar one that eh?) and appearing to force them into closure.

The public have responded witha loud rasberry and are supporting them with some fantastic attendances, generous donations towards the weeky costs and the team are bloody good anyway.

That is Gavin Tomlin once of Torquay United in their squad, as a somewhat verteran his pitch time is limited but he remains one of the very best of many good players in that league which sees only the champions go up automatically and one from the next six from the play-offs.....significatly Hamlet have been in those play-offs for the past four seasons without making that final push. Las season I followed then to Bognor Regis for the final where they 'never turned' up as the saying goes.

If we have to go down; then playing at Champion Hill would be the highlight of my season...a super club; a wonderful day out and last week my son and I sat on the halfway line for a fiver yet I spent north of £40 on food and drink; not leaving the ground until an hour and a half after the final whistle having got their two hours befiore. Thai curries, quality burgers, the finest of fine ale and nice comfy leather settees in the clubhouse ~ and it was still packed when we left!
I’d be quite happy to see Dulwich get promoted, even if it’s just on the basis of their kit colours. Although they’ve had enough near misses recently to deserve the chance to go up.

On the subject of NLS grounds difficult to get to, I think Concord Rangers must top the lot! Although potential challengers to Dulwich for promotion Leiston would also be an horrendous journey for Gulls fans from far and wide

I don’t disagree, but don’t you think that Gnabouyou felt like a bit of a panic signing and that didn’t work out at all. Providing we are pursuing some striking options - which we simply must be! - we are only going to get one chance to get it right. We can’t afford another Gnabouyou!

I’m guessing he is predominately right sided, thus allowing Dowling and Efete to return to playing in a natural position. And the acquisition of Balatoni allows McGinty to move across to the left side of a back 3 where he seemed to do his best work

Use to be answers on a postcard.............but answer here please guys ! :scarf:
In their defence, it will take time to secure a striker. There will be a cascade effect - an L1 Club will sign a Championship player, which in turn shuffles out one of their reserves who signs for an L2 Club, who in turn creates an available player who we can sign.

I think it is still a bit early in the window - doesn’t sko our position but I’d rather they got the Recruitment right rather than panicking in the first couple of weeks

DB57 wrote: 12 Jan 2018, 08:44 I can't understand why someone of Paul Sturrock's standing feels it is necessary to make his offer to the club via a Fans Forum. Surely the professional approach is by way of the proper channels at Plainmoor. If that draws a blank then so be it. He isn't likely to get very far by this route is he?
Could not agree more with this statement. I know various people have verified that this is genuinely from Sturrock, butit just doesn’t feel right at all - surely PS wouldn’t go about his business in this way, it’s so unprofessional

You can’t not be satisfied with this signing (on the face of it, at least). 100+ games at a decent level (and before anyone slags off the Scottish FL, Bobby Olejnik and Favid Graham prove that decent players there do exist), and a league not dissimilar to this in terms of style of play etc. I’d be surprised if international clearance was an issue before the weekend - even Falkirk is civilised enough for computers and fax machines. I think GO was “Head of Recruitment” for an SPL side in days gone by (Hearts or Hibs I think) so may well be someone he’s seen plenty off.

I like the way in true torquay fashion we’ve already started digging up dirty laundry on said player. Find me a centre half who’s not made a mistake, and I’ll show you someone far too good to ever play for us. An SPL/Scottish Championship player should be more than capable.

Can’t work out what Dorel was doing for that second goal at all.

There is a chance at around 2min 20 where the defending is criminal from start to finish.

Just looks like a horror show

Is this all 'FAKE NEWS'

I’m bored of people regurgitating the “we’re not rubbish anymore” quote every 2 mins.

If memory serves me right that was after the Ebbsfleet game. Who was there? Because I was and we certainly weren’t rubbish, and it looked for all the world that we would survive comfortably after that.

Unfortunately that quote is going to hang over GO now, but I wish people would take it in the context that it was said in.

I’m fairly confident that anyone who was there that night wouldn’t have foreseen how things have gone since

goody2449 wrote: 05 Jan 2018, 11:51 Wholesale change?? they've brought in an 18-year-old kid, who has started 2 games and come on as a sub in 7, and a lad who wasn't getting a game at Colchester. The players that have left, Davey, Bobb, Mcquoid, Murphy were all the managements signing, on short loans. why put themselves in a situation where all the loans run out at the same time, its pathetic management. I'm, not a Nicholson fan, by any stretch but you have to ask why he wasn't given the funds at the start of the season these two mugs have wasted.
I don’t think that the squad Nico put together at the start of the season resembles cheap though. They are all experienced, 30+ year olds who have had decent reputations, and would likely have families, mortgages etc to deal with that you wouldn’t get with a younger player. I just don’t think Nico used his money wisely.

My concern at the start of the season was that Nico effectively put together a side of players who he played against and rated. It almost resembled a League 2 Select XI from 2011/12. If they’d all been able to replicate their form from that era we’d have been laughing. But as it was, they were all well past their sell-by date and injury prone.
