rise of the guardians = good family film, a bit predictable in places, a little bit dark, some amusing moments, although not a christmas film, probably best watched near christmas.8/10

Skyfall. wow what a film.although i still think Casino Royale is better

Watched Django Unchained the other day.

I loved it. Perhaps went on a little bit long but I definitely think Tarantino is back to his best with this one.

frankenweenie. a typical tim burton film. out of his animated stuff this was the only one i sat all the way through. a homage to the old black and white universal horrors. some nice clever bits and little touches. will raise a few smiles and slight chuckles, a bit predictable, but not bad. 7.5/10.

here comes the boom. harmless bit of fun, feelgood movie. bit of a rocky inspired type of thing. (like so many others).

nothing too clever or taxing, funny in places. you do actually like the characters in it, which helps the film a lot, because if you didnt then it wouldnt be as watchable.

i like kevin james, i used to watch him a lot in king of queens, i've liked his films including grown ups.

mind you, a few people, including the wife and kid have said in recent years i look like him, same build and everything.

even a work colleague a couple of years back said to me " i was driving along with my little boy today and he said look daddy its paul blart mall cop, i looked over, and it was you walking along the street"

i was like "f*** off". :-o but looking at how much weight kevin james lost to make this film we arent so similar anymore.

anyway, dont care what the critics say - 8/10

This is not a new film, it was made 53 years ago, but, after many recommendations, and finding it at last through the Mosfilm website, I saw it recently for the first time. It's based on Chekhov's story, The Lady with the Little Dog. It's 84 minutes long, it's in Russian and it's in monochrome (black & white). Don't let that put you off. Stick with it. It's very watchable. In fact, it's a beautiful, wonderful film:

What's the story? Gurov, a Moscow banker, unhappy in his marriage, is frequently unfaithful, and considers women to be of “a lower race”. While vacationing in Yalta, he meets a young lady, Anna. They are soon involved in an affair. Although she is expecting her husband to come to Yalta, he eventually sends for her to come home, saying something is wrong with his eyes. Gurov sees her off at the station.

Returning to Moscow and his daily routine, Gurov expects to forget young Anna, but finds he is haunted by her memory. On the ruse of going to St. Petersburg to take care of some business, he sets off to her town to find her. Learning the location of the family’s residence from a hotel porter, he finds the house, only to realize it would be futile to intrude. In despair, he reasons that Anna has probably forgotten him, and heads back to his hotel.

In the evening, he remembers having seen a sign earlier promoting a performance of The Geisha. Reasoning that Anna and her husband may attend the first performance, he goes to the theatre. The couple enters and he watches intently. When the husband goes out for a smoke during the first interval, Gurov greets Anna, who is bewildered and runs from him. After following her through the theatre, he confronts her and she confides that she has been thinking of him constantly. But, frightened, she begs him to leave. Gurov realizes that for the first time in his life he has actually fallen in love.

They arrange to meet once more. It turns out to be their final meeting, before they go their separate ways to resume their family duties and loyalties, never to see each other again.

just watched Jack Reacher - bit of a thriller/action type of thing, simple but very clever. like him or not nobody does these these type of films or roles better than tom cruise. he may be a bit looney toon in real life but he does make some damn good films.

this is his finest for quite a while and is well worth a watch. 9/10

I really liked that film too, Chunks. As you say, Cruise is ideal in a role like that.

Alpha Papa / Alan Partridge

Usual caper, not bad but not great. Love the bit where he is in the car listening to Roachford though!

I thought Alpha Papa was decent. A nice use of Cromer Pier too, I was only there a few weeks ago.

One thing I did notice is that the jokes continue all the way through. Unlike Hot Fuzz type films which often get serious towards the end.

I was at Cromer too back in April Luke so I recognised where he was, plus we all sat in front of the town hall / behind the market in Norwich for some lunch when I visited there in April and they showed the convoy going past there on the film so I recognised that too.

Did you go to Sheringham while you were there too? Lovely place. Not been to Ipswich before, worth a visit?

Went to Sheringham a few years ago, caught the North Norfolk Railway from Holt to Sheringham. Lovely place but pebbly beaches so not great for the little un but still enjoyable. Can't say I have a burning desire to visit Ipswich Luke but maybe Colchester with the Roman history perhaps.

Going to see the Smurfs 2 tomorrow with the little one. I'll take my own scoffs as usual so I don't have to apply for a loan to buy some there. On the subject of sweets at cinemas, I saw a watchdog once where I think they said that cinemas can't legally stop you going in to see the film with goodies that haven't been purchased from their cinema. Does anyone know if this is true?

True, highly enjoyable visit though. Some nice fish and chips on the wall looking out to sea, what more could you want?

I shall bear that in mind about Colchester. I've been up this way for 4 years now and really haven't seen enough of the area than I should have.
