Radio Devon and the demise of the BBC

Post by davethegull2 »

Now it's been announced that the BBC will cease to be a forced tax and will have to compete for customers. Do we, Gulls Fans, give a flying monkeys chuff about the demise of Radio Devon? After decades of contempt for Torquay United, they are about to get their comeuppance. From Chris Fear and Dick Woodacre to more recently Slapperly Cornish have ignored, condescended, sneered and belittled the Gulls. I will not miss them at all. Good riddance.

The British Broadcasting Corporation, the clue is in the name, so why do they spend over100 million a year of our money on news offices abroad plus all the staff when if a story broke in any of these countries that was worthy of our attention a local reporter could be sourced at a fraction of the costs. Have they been put on notice, definetely, will it come to pass, debateable. Do we deserve more coverage , more to the point do we warrant it, for many we are a still a big club in devon when the reality is anything but. if you have a small sports team at radio devon the two leagues clubs and the the chiefs get what little there is to go around, I have listened to several radio devon away day coverages this season mainly just to see how we are doing as opposed to the quality of coverage, it is obvious the BBC send anyone that is available to provide coverage who obviously know little about football and certainly nothing about Torquay. I believe comptetion in all things is a good thing, I dont see anyone jumping to take their place other than the TUFC commentary team who seem to have weekly technical isues and must be using equpment given to them by Marconi when he was a boy and if we have any more financial cutbacks then they will axed.

Nadine Dorries thanks you for your service in deflecting attention away from the shambolic PM.

Well said. The announcement was a surprise smokescreen, unsubtle and no doubt popular with Boris fanboys.

The other smokescreen is using the military to deal with migrants, or sending them to Ghana or Rwanda for processing. Just anything really to divert from the worst Government I can remember in my 67 years!

I would cut funding for the likes of cretinous politicians like Dorries. An utterly ghastly example of humanity. Flipping Tories cut free licences for the elderly. Pity they can’t (say) freeze rail fare increases which would be more beneficial to many. What an utterly spiteful vindictive bunch of turds we have wrecking this country.

Only because it suits all their Amazon, Sky and BT mates. Pensioners are just used as an excuse. They are probably more BBC than the younger generation.

At least we can try and get this factually correct. For a start the government did 'not' cut free Tv licences for the over-75's yes pensioners under that age never got the free licence anyway, it was the BBC who took the decision to cut free TV licences for the over 75's and their decision alone after it took over the funding of free licensing in 2015, it must be pointed out that pensioners over the age of 75 on pension credit still get a free TV licence.

My own mother lost her free TV licence, she has 3 pensions coming in and only accrues money each month, her own words were, I can afford to pay a TV licence, I'm not worried, as many well off pensioners can, but that's by the by, as said those who can't still get it free.

What's all this out pouring of grief for the BBC all about, well respected, where and up who's arse, it was once, hasn't been for years.

We pay £157, for the spouting of woke bias shite, for a flag ship soap opera (that's also shite) that's about as realistic as Rambo 3 , we pay for endless repeats of shite made 10 years ago, all from an organisation that justifies charging young struggling families for this utter shite while paying Linaker £1.3 million for telling what we already know about the days football, and Zoe Ball gets £1 million for radio2 breakfast show, a sense of perspective here.

The BBC has needed a root and branch over haul for years.

Guardian - The protests blaming the BBC for ending free TV licences for the over-75s have neatly fallen into the government’s trap (Report, 11 June). As with local government closures of libraries and Sure Start centres, the blame has been outsourced from its origin. Gordon Brown introduced the scheme as part of support for poorer pensioners before the triple lock was introduced. That has seen pensioner incomes rise much faster than other welfare recipients.
The Conservative government, as part of its austerity programme, decided to dump the cost on to the BBC and now the ire is directed at the broadcaster, particularly by media organisations that see it as a rival, envy its funding or dislike its even-handed approach to reporting, calling this “socialist”.

Their are many many things wrong with the BBC ...Laura Kuennsberg for a start (BBC News / political bias no argument there ! ) Salaries for its big names are perverse and certainly need to be reviewed !!

I don't watch any soap opera on any channel but each to their own on that one !

What is Woke bias shite ??

On the plus side we have the amazing documentaries with David Attenborough. Hugely popular shows (although not for me ! ) like Strictly.

The BBC has to cater for all the population with all of its DIVERSITY ! (subtle hint BBC3 ). Its Radio stations cover every region and as such also broadcasts in Welsh and Gaelic (TV as well )

Radio 3 & Radio 6 thankfully still exist.

I avoid commercial radio because of its constant advert interruptions

My favourite channel is BBC4 with its science and history.

All of this for £3 per week or 43 p per day. Again that can be reviewed.

There were comparisons with Sky, BT , Netflix and Amazon prime. They may be slightly cheaper but in no way do they provide the same breath of coverage. In any case Sky & BT charge a subscription fee and show adverts !!!!!!

I agree that there needs to be a discussion on a move forward but ideas of the BBC taking advertising is a non starter for me as one of the beauties of watching a drama is it not being interrupted by adverts !! There is not enough advertising revenue to go around at the moment anyway if you have ever watched PBS or the Smithsonian channel you will know what I mean !!

Dave the Gull ...Chris fear was on ITV and their local coverage has not always been great either ! Pete Barraclough Martyn Dean etc !

I agree that this is a smoke screen to deflect anything away from the crook / liar that is Boris Johnson. Channel 4 news got that one spot on tonight !!

The Tories want to shutdown channel 4 because it exposes them and their assault on the BBC is just an attempt to win a bit of popularity back.
That wont work you fecking bunch of crooks !!

Typical Tories blame somebody else in this case the BBC !!

Trying not getting involved in this political debate but worst Government in 67 years?

They have all been bloody useless. The 70's saw the oil crisis, the decline of traditional British industries, inefficient production, high inflation and industrial disputes, the 80's saw deflationary government policies including spending cuts, pursuance of monetarism, switch from a manufacturing economy to a services economy, the 90's saw high bank/interest rates, rising inflation, Boom or Bust syndrome to maintain British membership of the EU Exchange Rate Mechanism, early 2000 saw the financial meltdown, rising global commodity prices, subprime mortgage crisis, bankrupt British banking sector, major credit crunch. And now we have COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the Russia–Saudi Arabia oil price war, international travel bans, the corporate debt bubble and coronavirus liquidity crisis.

Thank God I won't be around for another 67 years.

Certainly this "Government " must hold the record for the amount of times their hands have been caught in the till ! And no doubt many more to come ! The PPE handing out of contracts to their mates must be one of the worst scandals in history. Just hope that The Good Law Project can continue with their great work ands get these crooks prosecuted for the blatant misuse of OUR money !!
