NEXT UP | Truro City (08/04/24 7:45pm KO)

Post by TorquayFans.com »

Just 48 hours after making the trip Welling, United will be back on the road on Monday, as The Gulls take on Truro City in Gloucester. With the White Tigers having triumphed over The Gulls back on Boxing Day, Aaron Downes’ side will be setting their sights on three valuable points, which could go a long way towards securing their National League status for 2024/25.   Who’s the Boss? Image In the opposition dugout, Truro boss Paul Wotton will need little introduction in certain parts of Devon. Having established himself as a club legend at Devon neighbours Plymouth Argyle during two spells at the Club, the defender / midfielder amassed nearly 500 appearances, and scored over 60 goals during a combined total of some 17 years at Home Park. Wotton has been in the dugout at Truro for nearly five years now, with the club one of a number to see their progress stall as a result of the early curtailment of 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns. However, promotion glory came their way in due course, with last year’s success seeing them regain their place in the sixth tier once again.   How have they been doing? With City in the midst of playing catch-up following a string of postponements at both of their previous ‘home’ grounds this term, the Cornish side’s final placing with largely depend on how the side cope with a schedule which will see them play as astonishing 8 matches in just 22 days. creditable achievement in its own right.   Player to Watch Image Talismanic hitman Tyler Harvey remains the main man at Truro, with fans delighted, and relieved, to hear that his immediate future lies with Wotton’s side. Having begun his career, like his boss, at his hometown club, a permanent move to Wrexham failed to bring out the best in the Plymouth-born striker, and following stints at Bath City and Salisbury, Harvey has gone on to establish himself as a modern-day legend at City, where he has averaged a goal every two games in a White shirt.   Played for Both Image City forward Dan Sullivan rejoined The White Tigers in the summer of 2022, however it was at Plainmoor that the Plymouth-born attacker took his first steps. After rising through United’s youth ranks, Dan managed to make five first-team outings for The Gulls, before moving north of the county to sign for Bideford on loan. A second, successful, temporary switch to Hereford followed, before Sullivan made his way to Truro for the first time in 2015. His initial spell at City was a brief one, however, after regularly finding the net at Bodmin, Tavistock and then in Somerset with Taunton – where he was named as Player of the Season by supporters in 2022 – he returned to Truro to finish where he left off.   Previous Encounter Image It’s almost gone down in footballing folklore that United’s last ‘away’ league match at Truro was played at Plainmoor, as tenants City played host to landlords Torquay during The Gulls’ memorable 2018/19 title-winning campaign. It was Truro who made themselves at home first though, as future Gull Jared Lewington fired his side into an early lead. Jamie Reid levelled things up later in the first half, but it wouldn’t be until the latter stages of the game that strikes from Reid, again, and Kalvin Lumbombo-Kalala eventually clinched a 3-1 win for Gary Johnson’s side, to send the 2,760 travelling fans in a total crowd of 2,812, back home happy.   Truro Match Made All Ticket United fans travelling for this fixture in Gloucester are reminded it has been made all-ticket for both home and away fans.
