New signing - Louis Briscoe

Post by Scott Brehaut »

Press release:
UNITED are poised to complete the signing of forward Louis Briscoe on a two-year deal.
The Gulls have been working hard throughout the summer to identify targets and the acquisition of Briscoe is a huge boost for manager Chris Hargreaves in his quest to build a squad for the new season.
Briscoe, 26, came through the youth ranks at Port Vale and made three appearances for the Valiants before moving into non-League football for a few years with Leek Town, Hednesford Town, Gresley Rovers, Stafford Rangers and Ilkeston Town.
A defining move to Mansfield arrived in 2009 and in five years as a Stag, Briscoe won Player of the Year, was named in the Conference Team of the Year and helped Mansfield secure promotion back to the Football League.
It is a terrific addition for United and, although Hargreaves has cooled his interest in Luton striker Jon Shaw, there are sure to be more arrivals through the Yellow door as we approach the start of pre-season.
The deal for Briscoe is subject to completion of all the necessary paperwork
Thoughts?

Not gonna lie no clue who he is... but will reserve my judgement until he's actually kicked a ball for us! But at least it's some progress in terms of transfers. :)

Decent addition. Was good for the Stags.

Been around a bit, wiki says he's 6 foot so will at least be more of a presence

Hopefully one of those players who has played for a lot of clubs but likes and settles in the area and does well

Did not make the step up to League football but decent at this level for the Stags and at the prime of his career so I would say a decent addition. You need a bit of physical about you and at 6ft (on the wing or in a forward 3) he should provide more than Benyon/Hawley and Chapell.

A positive start to the re-building i would say

Mansfield fans seemed to have liked him and thought he did not get a fair crack. Most would have kept him:

I too read that thread, sounds promising if we can get him fit and motivated.

Sounds like a Tim Sills type - great at "non league", not so in the league.

More of a winger than a striker I think, at least I hope so, otherwise the goals per games tally doesn't look too good!
A replacement for Chappell I guess, pretty happy TBH :)

Yes, this could be a decent signing, to be honest know nothing about the lad so will judge on what I see. The thing for me is, Buckle as much as we loved him did prove one thing, if you go out and sign players hardened at this level who have had success it will lead to you being at the right end of league and more than likely going up, which is what we all want, Louis Briscoe fits that type of player.

Sorry just to add, Mansfield fan has said this on the non-league forum,

Briscoe is a good signing at this level. On his day he's unplayable at this level but doesn't do it as often as he should. Scores some absolutely belting goals and will be a real asset to Torquay.

We beat a number of clubs to his signature. Don't expect him to score goals (too often), but he might create a few.

1 in just over 5 games for Stags in this league Matt so he hopefully could score 8/9 over a season with that form - which would be more than handy
