TORBAY COUNCIL AT IT AGAIN! (SAVE THE RANGE)

Post by chunkygull »

Saw this article on Herald Express online about Torbay Council planners trying to revoke The Range's permission to sell anything other than DIY and garden items. This puts the stores future at threat therefore all the jobs it has created at threat. This is apparently because The Range could have too much impact on Torquay town centre. Never mind all the other reasons Torquay town centre is a crumbling, failing joke which is becoming a very unpleasant area and not a nice place to go.

The Range store is one of the best things about shopping in Torquay at the moment and apart from watching our beloved football team is pretty much the only reason I have ventured across from Paignton, but after I was there I actually popped into town so surely that is a positive effect, even though the town is crap.

This news has provoked a backlash against the council as many are annoyed and dismayed by their decision. Do they not want any decent jobs here or large retail spaces being filled. They seem obsessed with turning down companies which will bring more prosperity, more jobs and better wages than anything a few tinpot, crappy small businesses in an already devastated, crumbling town ever could.

There are now two Herald articles, both carrying many comments about the lunacy and dislike of this decision.

As some have said the reasons the town is failing is hardly out of town retailers fault, if anything these stores are the only good thing about shopping in Torquay, some reasons given that the town is awful are -
Rows of closed shops and charity shops that the council are so concerned about. They should have thought about the effect Factory Row, Shrublands alcoholic facilities, drug rehab facilities, sex offender relocation etc around castle circus has on Torquay town centre.

Torquay town has nothing to offer, unless you want a coffee or a phone. Also the car parking charges.Torquay town centre is a disgrace, and who is to blame for that, you people in office have no idea except when it comes to destroying towns.

I was born and bred on Torquay and the last time I visited the town and harbour area I was so embarrassed at the state it was in I vowed not to return.

Torbay council need to get there head out of the bloody sand the range has created jobs in the area and wants to create more how can they do that when they come up against a brick wall the range brought me back to Torquay shopping i stopped coming cos it is so full of charity shops £1 shops and junk shops its almost as if they wont be happy till they have killed the town what happened to the old adage there is nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition

Is Torquay going to be a family tourist town and business zone or is it going to stay a drug and benefits zone. How about a bit of honesty Torbay Town Council and The Herald.

So you can't sell the products people need because it may damage the high street (of charity shops and empty buildings) but you can site drug rehab centres, Factory Row, Shekinah projects, alcoholic rehab, criminal and sex offender relocation around our tourist town centre. You can hand out methadone at designated methadone pharmacies around Castle Circus, and turn around and say these have no effect on trade and tourism. We simply have no faith in our town council or our local press anymore.

Torquay town does have a Wilkinsons, Argos and a Primark but that is about all they have to offer really so what the hell are they thinking.

Here are the Herald articles, please read these and the comments with them, it would be a travesty if those poor people lost there jobs as we really cannot afford anymore unemployment here. -

Somebody has also started a Facebook campaign to Save The Range and good on them, there has been a massive response already in just a few hours. Please click on the link and like this page, there is also a petition to sign against this action happening.

I don't have a particularly high opinion of the Range. I don't like big superstores because they're too big and I get lost in them and it always takes me too long to find what I want. Smaller shops specialising in particular products are much better, and for the most part no more expensive. Whilst the staff at the Range are excellent, the store here is also too big and I can never find what I want. And they're not really that cheap.

That said, you're right about Torbay Council; absolute disgrace. Let the shopping public decide where they want to shop.

Nowt wrong with The Range..

Brings jobs to any area.

May I suggest you ask them for a map of the store when you next visit to assist you in getting around it.

I did ask for a map. I was directed towards a sign by the escalator which sent me to one end of the store; I eventually found what I wanted at the opposite end, after searching for ages in that department. Mind you, other big stores are hardly any better.. :(

Even so, nobody wants local authority bureaucrats interfering and dictating how people should run their businesses.. :@

Come on guys, I thought this would get more of a response. Lets hear what a few more of you think. This is an absolute disgrace, small minded, billy big bollocks, jobsworth, control freak, bullying, buraeucracy gone mad at its worst. It is against democracy, we should have the choice of what we buy and where we shop.

I'm disgusted at Torbay council for this, if not unsurprised, it is surely a good thing if stores such as this want to come here. Just think of the jobs at risk because of this action.

Please click the links below, take a look at the new article on Herald Express online and the facebook page, please click like the page and click and sign the petition. Over 1650 likes on the page and 1200 signatures on the petition so far, but there needs to be more. You only have to read some of the comments to see what this means to people.

All the crap the council try and spin about new of town stores being bad for the town or the town being affected and they are trying to protect the high street. It was destroyed long ago by their lack of vision, investment, greed and very poor decisions.

The guy who started the facebook page and petition actually owns a shop in the town and he feels stores like The Range dont effect business and are a positive for Torquay.

Please lets try and help save these peoples jobs and show the council what the people think of them.
