Thought For the Day

Post by Gullscorer »

Just one a day? Well, one minimum. Feel free to add your own thoughts. I'll kick off with this one:

"A woman will always be pleased if a man turns to look at her - and if he is well dressed or drives an expensive sports car, so much the better." Esther Vilar. :-D

India is the largest Muslim-minority population country in the world but it has the third largest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan.

Pakistan has an estimated population of 180 million out of which 96.3% of its population are Muslims which makes it around 173 million Muslims, whereas around 160 million Muslims live in India, who are, incidentally, generally proud of their Indian citizenship.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” C S Lewis

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky... (John Masefield, Poet Laureate)

I left my vest and socks there; I wonder if they're dry? ..............(Spike Milligan, Potty Rollicker)

Much as I loved Spike Milligan, who was a great entertainer, it's the words of John Masefield which will, probably deservedly, reverberate in people's hearts and minds through the years. And yet, if you read the life stories of both of these two men, who were otherwise ordinary human beings like the rest of us, you will find each of them in their own way to be thought-provoking and inspiring. How can we emulate that in our own lives?

This is stencilled on the outside wall of the Ness pub in Shaldon. Always tickles me.

Here's Masefield's full poem, Sea Fever:

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way, where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

And another example of Spike Milligan's humour:

Mary had a little lamb,
She ate it with mint sauce.
And everywhere that Mary went
The lamb went too, of course!

Saw this on the PASOTI (spit) forum:

There are more people that live in London than in the entirety of Austria.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.
