IN THE HISTORY BOOKS: Swindon 3-3 Torquay - 30th October 2004

Post by Louis »

Torquay United travelled to Wiltshire for this League One clash in the 2004/05 season. Leroy Rosenior was the man in charge at Plainmoor, having delivered the unbelievable feat of promotion last time out. Having lost key man David Graham, and working on a very limited budget, Rosenior's side were always going to be in for a tough campaign. Swindon were consolidated in the division at the time, eventually finishing slap bang in 12th place in the 04/05 season. This match at the end of October was the first meeting of the two sides, and Rosenior's side lined up at the County Ground as follows;

Oli Gottskalksson, Lee Canoville (Martin Phillips 81), Steve Woods, Craig Taylor, Brian McGlinchey, Tony Bedeau, Alex Russell, Kevin Hill, Jo Kuffour (Martin Gritton 67), Adebayo Akinfenwa, Leon Constantine. Subs unused: Matt Villis, Stuart Boardley, Arjan van Heusden (GK).

The opening goal of the game saw United go 1-0 up as loanee striker Leon Constantine continued his fine form which Mike Bateson broke the club record for, paying £75,000 for his services (once he signed permanently he was rubbish). The lead didn't last too long, as Sam Parkin equalised. 5 minutes later and Swindon were in the lead, with Sammy Igoe scoring. Another 4 minutes after that and Brian Howard gave the Robins a 2-goal cushion, and it looked like game over. The first half ended at 3-1. Whatever Leroy said at half time clearly worked though, as United pulled back the two goals in the second half. Adebayo Akinfenwa scored in the 66th and 84th minutes to rescue a point, which sent the travelling Yellow Army into a celebratory mood. It was a fine comeback a point gained, considering the position they had been in 45 minutes before hand.

Since this match at the County Ground 9 years ago, United have played 3 times at Swindon, losing all 3. Fingers crossed it isn't 4 after tomorrow.
