IN THE HISTORY BOOKS: Morecambe 0-2 Torquay - 20th April 2013

Post by Louis »

A game that happened just a few months ago is part of the pre-match features this time around. We travelled to Morecambe on the penultimate weekend of last season, so it is an unusual occurence that we are up there again so soon. Last time we made the trip, we had just come off the back of an exciting 3-2 win over fellow-strugglers Barnet, and we knew that we needed to win at the Globe Arena to really push on in the fight for survival. Morecambe didn't have a lot to play for, but it was their final home match of the season so they would have wanted to perform for their supporters. Around 250 Gulls made the long trip north, hoping for another big performance and 3 points from Alan Knills side.

The line up that started the match for United was; Michael Poke, Joe Oastler, Aaron Downes, Brian Saah, Kevin Nicholson, Damon Lathrope, Lee Mansell, Billy Bodin, Ryan Jarvis, Rene Howe, Elliot Benyon. Subs; Martin Rice, Ashley Yeoman, Angus McDonald, Tom Cruise, Ian Morris, Danny Stevens, Nathan Craig.

The game was a fairly quiet affair for the opening 2o minutes or so, but a crazy 5 minute spell really turned the game on it's head, and it was in our favour. First, Elliot Benyon was put through on goal but he was pulled down about 35 yards out, by young defender Chris Doyle. He was subsequently shown a red card on his debut, ending after just 24 minutes. About three minutes later, we were infront. A throw-in on the left by Nicholson was headed out, and Stuart Drummond took the ball under control before passing it back to Barry Roche. He went to punt it clear but inexplicably the ball rolled under his foot and in, and United were 1-0 up. It really was a crazy few minutes, but it put us in a great position. That was how it stayed until half time, with neither side really forcing either keeper into many saves.

The second half was still a tight affair. Both sides hit the woodwork, as the hosts tried to pull level. It took until the 69th minute for the next goal, and what a goal it was. Ashley Yeoman, fresh on for Elliot Benyon, ran on to a knock-on from Howe. He started from just inside the Morecambe half, and kept going. Faced by two defenders, he took it past them before slotting it past Roche into the far corner, causing mad scenes in the away end. That was how it stayed until the final whistle, and Alan Knills side had taken a huge step towards League 2 football, which they officially sealed with a final day 3-3 draw with Bristol Rovers.
