IN THE HISTORY BOOKS: Gulls 0 - 0 Wycombe - 22nd April 2011

Post by Louis »

The last time Wycombe Wanderers came to Plainmoor was in April 2011. Over 4000 fans turned up to see the promotion clash, as United were sitting pretty in the top 7, with eyes set on the top 3. The Chairboys were the target, having been sat in 3rd place, so 3 points were vital for Paul Buckle's men. In the previous fixture at Adams Park, the Gulls had swept their hosts aside in a magical performance to win comfortably by 3 goals to 1. Wanderers manager Gary Waddock stated how well we had played that night, and this game followed suit. United dominated from the off, with an attacking quartet of Eunan O'Kane, Chris Zebroski, Jake Robinson and Gavin Tomlin. They caused havoc all game for the visitors, but they just could not beat the heroic performance by Nikki Bull. Bull is a name familiar to Gulls fans, having nearly left Aldershot to join us in 2008, before dropping that and then being the hero at Plainmoor as the Shots edged us out in a title-clincher. Anyway, back to this game. Buckle changed his side up by bringing on Billy Kee in place of Damon Lathrope, and in the final 10 minutes he brought Ronan Murray on to replace Tomlin. However despite that, United still could not find the elusive goal that would have given them a real shout of joining the top 3.

The final whistle came to cheers from the away end, as they knew that was a very important point they'd won, despite not really deserving it. Gulls fans were frustrated as they deserved all the points, and the game had relieved all hope of automatic promotion. Instead, we had to settle for the playoffs, which we ended up losing to Stevenage in the Final at Old Trafford. Wycombe finished 3rd, a point better off than Shrewsbury Town, so it was League One for them. This point certainly helped their cause though, when a loss would have meant it was playoffs for them as well!

Here's hoping for a better result tomorrow, so come on you Yellows!
