Shots on target..

Post by Gullscorer »

.. No, I don't mean the Aldershot players, although, despite conceding eight goals yesterday, they still managed to score two.

Shots fans have criticised their defence as being clueless, and their goalkeeper Phil Smith as one of the worst seen at the club. Which is probably a little unfair, and an over-reaction to yesterday's 8-2 defeat. They happen to be going through a bad spell, and their manager is having to cope with problems similar to those seen at Plainmoor in recent times. But whereas we've survived and are now playing with confidence, they are still suffering and playing with inconsistency, to put it mildly.

No, I'm talking about the shots our own players take whenever they have a sight of goal. Sometimes it seems as if our players think they're playing Rugby not Soccer, so many times we've seen the ball go over the top of the bar, and sometimes over the top of the stand..!!

Every player should always be aware of where other players are on the pitch at any moment of the game, and of what's going on around him. Not always easy. But consider this. How much easier is it for a player to know exactly where the goal is. The goal doesn't move. It always stays in the same place. So every player should always know where the goal is, even more so when he's in front of goal and about to take a shot. This is the moment when he should be focussing on nothing but the ball and the shot he's about to take, so he can keep the ball down and the shot on target. Again, not always easy. But until he does that, there is no goal, no glory, nothing.

In the first half of the Shots' game yesterday, Chester had eight shots on goal and scored from seven of them!! Which seems to indicate that if we shoot at every opportunity on Saturday, providing we can keep our shots on target, we'll have a great chance of scoring more goals than the Shots and of winning the game. Go to it, lads..
