Chima Okorie

Post by ForgotAboutHim »

Hello everyone,

We recently spoke to one-time Gulls striker Chima Okorie about his footballing career. For those who don't remember the big Nigerian, he played one season for you in 1994-95, but despite being one of Indian football's greatest ever goalscorers, his career failed to take off over here.

The article in question is on our site, ForgotAboutHim.com, if you would like to have a read:

Cheers!

Good article. I never knew he was such a cult figure in India before he came to us, I had always thought he was just your average journeyman foreign player.

I always thought he was quite handy, him and Gregory Goodridge were the memorable figures in that side. I vaguely remember one game where, having squandered a 2-0 lead to be 2-2 with about 15 left to play, we won a corner and Chima was introduced as a sub. He came on, jogged into the penalty area and without breaking stride promptly volleyed the corner in. We won 3-2. Stuff like that never happens these days :'(

Never realised he was so big over there, either. I know his daughter (I think, anyway)..

i have one particular memory of Chima at TUFC, and that was a match he played in at Wycombe for us (i particularly remember as my missus doesn't do football, and that was the first game she ever came to with me, and hasn't been much since), and the weather was appalling. Hail, sleet, wind, which meant she hated it, but more so, i remember Chima looking absolutely shocked at the good old British weather, as well as looking frozen, until one of our fans shouted out "don't worry Chima, it's called hail" !!! he didn't smile, but we all laughed !!

I'm just casually cheering myself up now with Chima Okorie posts...

Check out this goal video posted on Richard Hancox's youtube channel - ... I personally like the music he has added for effect! :)

That was taken from Torquay United's season video. I'd recognise that uplifting jingle anywhere

Profiled him a couple of months ago for the Highway to Hele 'Where are they now?' (issue 12). Great character.
