Kidderminster v Torquay United-TUE 15th

Post by Dave »

Saturday saw the young Gulls play for 60 minutes away from home with ten men, and secure what could be another vital point. This coming Tuesday see's our squad return to midweek action, with a trip to Aggborough home of Kidderminster Harriers FC.

The Harriers, like us have gone through some well documented off field problems, Kidderminster rocked by financial problems and high profile board resignations, had little choice but to reduce their budget and break up a successful squad, that looked like it would return to the football league under former manager Steve Burr. Like Torquay, this season Kidderminster have a very small squad, the Harriers have been forced to beg, steal and borrow players, with five players at the club on loan, including Alex Palmer, Andre Wright and Tahvon Campbell on loan from W.B.A, Andrew Fox from Peterborough and Kelvin Langmead from Ebbsfleet.

In a similar view point, held by Dean Edwards and the current board of Torquay United, the board of Kidderminster will not use financial problems as an excuse, nor will they hide behind that as a reason for the Harriers currently sat bottom of the NL premier division, in this last week the Harriers saw major changes to their team management set-up, with current manager Gary Whild moving up stairs as head of football operations, his assistant and former Harriers player Mark Creighton leaving the club altogether, and the appointment of former England and Blackburn goalkeeper Tim Flowers as head coach.

Kidderminster Harriers also have former Torquay United left back Lathaniel Rowe-Turner in their squad.

Kidderminster club Chairmen of management changes

Chairman Rod Brown said: "We’ve worked incredibly hard this week to find the best way to get the most out of what we have here.

"It's about how we can best allow those who are here to do their job to the best of their ability. For me, Gary retaining a substantial interest in team affairs was of absolute paramount importance.

“You only have to spend a short time with him to learn about his knowledge of the game and it was crucial this wasn’t lost – but I think the change to his role will also energise and excite him.

“Tim has an unquestionable reputation within the game and his experience is second to none, so I know all of the players respect that and enjoy learning from him.

“This is a great opportunity for Tim and a chance for us to see how things unfold.”

With regards to Creighton’s departure, the chairman added: “We felt that this was the best decision for us at this time but, perhaps more importantly, the best one for Mark as well.

“He has worked incredibly hard here, but it’s going to be good for him to find other opportunities within the game. He’ll go and do that with our very best wishes."

He added: "We were explicit in what we said in the summer when we talked about how difficult this season was going to be with the restraints we were working under.

"What’s important now is for everyone at the club and for all of our supporters to solidify and get together in their backing of Tim, Gary and the team – for the future of the club.”

Director of football Gary Whild on their match with FC Halifax

He said: "[The lads] are out there in the trenches and having a go - that was evident out there today.

"You expect them to come off with one or two bumps and bruises as we ask the lads to put their bodies on the line.

"They certainly did that today."

Of Langmead's first start since August, Whild added: "I thought he was absolutely outstanding and was everything we've missed, as we've talked about on many occasions.

"He's not sat too far away from me as I'm speaking so I don't want to embarrass him too much, but if we'd have had him in previous games and in certain situations then the goals against column would have been reduced."

From a Torquay united point of view

Many fans will see the last two draws as disappointing results, personally think the draw with Welling should be seen as a positive rather than a negative, to play a match for 61 minutes away from with 10 men is one thing, to have your goalkeeper sent off and recover to take a point, in match where by our team has created more chances is something else, it hardly comes as surprise that manager Paul Cox was delighted with both the performance and end result.

The Speiss v Lavercombe debate is one that divides opinions between Torquay fans, and there's nothing wrong in that, it would appear from match reports from fans who attended the Welling across the forums and social media, the one thing they all agree on, is Speiss should not have been sent off, so will the club appeal, that remains to be seen, if they don't, Lavercombe will get a run of match's many fans feel he deserves. The thing I personally hope, is all of us TUFC fans begin to gain an understanding of where our club is right now, where our players are in their careers and development.

In Speiss and Lavercombe the club in reality hasn't got one goalkeeper, we have two very young and inexperienced keepers, if the club had the finances I'm sure a better option would have been signed and one of two other keepers kept as a back up, Lavercombe whilst no one doubts his potential shouldn't been seen as magical fix to our perceived goalkeeping problems and pretty unfair to heap such pressure on a very young player.

Regardless of whether the club appeals or not, whether Lavercombe retains his place, or Speiss is returned to the line up once his suspension is up, we surely have to learn as fans to support all our players equally, there is nothing wrong with any fan sharing an opinion, constructive criticism of any players performance, no fan should feel they can't express such criticism, but, there's a huge difference between constructive criticism and personal abuse, and it's the later that needs to stop, and I'm referring to all our players, across all forms of social media.

Think we'd all agree this game against Kidderminster is vital for many reasons, I still don't think current results are season defining, it's still to early in the season for that, however, with consecutive home match's coming next week, a win here, would be just the tonic needed to help get fans back into Plainmoor, for me, this match v Kidderminster is a must not lose first and foremost, a win, being a huge bonus.

Boss reflects on draw at Welling United

PAUL'S PRIDE

“I am extremely proud of the lads,” he said. “It was hot out there yet we battled with ten men for over an hour and in the end, had we won by four or five, no-one could have questioned it.

“We created some good chances and displayed the kind of spirit and attitude that I am looking for at this club.

“I saw some of my players grow in stature out there today; they are starting to understand what this League is all about and that is a real positive.

“Everyone involved can be pleased with their efforts, the only disappointment is that we couldn’t take our chances and come home with all three points rather than just one.

“But we will take the positives into our next game.”

Lets face it - could you actually get two worse sides playing each other? Well other than the one legged eleven against the seven dwarves probably not.
Out of their last five matches each neither side has managed a win between them. That's ten matches and 0% wins. Appalling.

The only value is in a Kidderminster win @ full time - 65% value at a betfair price of 2.64 against a fair odds price of 1.81 A Torquay win is 3.25 but they should be 4.77 so absolutely no value in their price (a negative value of 40%)

There have been 20 goals in Torquays last five away games and the ball seems to hit the net quite often in Kiddys games. The price for both teams to score is 1.79 - that's really short as well, so cannot see a bet anywhere.

Prediction

Kidderminster 6

Torquay 3

Attendance 211 (+ a stray cat)

Think this is hard one to predict, both our clubs are going through similar struggles, both our teams are out form, with 3 points each from our last 6 match's, so who knows how this one will end up.

Brilliant piece of commentary when we got a throw in. "Here comes Exodus with one of his Exocet throw ins". Splendid.

Apart from that, nothing much has happened.
