Altrincham.v.Torquay

Post by Dave »

Saturday sees our team return to league action, with a trip north to Moss Lane home of Altrincham FC. Nicknamed Robins although better known as Alty, Altrincham are a famous non-league club, and have a very proud 124 year history, there's a few non-league clubs out there known for their F.A cup giant killing but Alty are the kings of giant killing, Altrincham hold the record for a non-league club knocking football league counterparts out of the F.A cup, achieving the feat on 16 occasions between 1921 - 1994.

Altrincham have twice won the F.A Trophy in 1977-1985, also have twice finished as conference champions under it's former name Alliance premier league 1979-80 and 1980-81 however there was no automatic promotion to the football league in those days, automatic promotion to the football league didn't start until 1987 and since then Alty have only come close to promotion once, in 1990-91 looked set to win the conference with just a few games left but would finish 3rd behind Barnet and Colchester, however with no play-offs, then only one up, one down, the season ended in disappointment for Altrincham.

Altrincham have found it difficult to compete since then, maybe two up, two relegation from the football league bringing many a big spending club into the conference hasn't helped, they earned a reprieve from relegation out of the conference on three separate occasions, however did suffer relegation to the conference north in 2010-11, the appointment of former Port Vale manager Lee Sinnott seems have transformed Altrincham's fortunes, last season Atly gained promotion back to the non-league top flight via the play-offs and so far, they're having a decent season, like us still in the F.A Trophy.

We've played Altrincham four times before, head to head as follows; Torquay 2 wins and there's been two draws.

Altrincham are sat 15th currently in the league table, their current form as follows; D-W-L-W-W-W.

Last time out Altrincham won 0.1 away at Kidderminster in the F.A Trophy and lined up as follows;

Stuart Coburn
Shuan Densmore
Gianluca Havern
Tom Marshall
Adam Griffin
Jake Moult
Simon Richman
Ryan Crowther
Damian Reeves
Nicky Clee
Sean Williams

Torquay are currently sat 10th in the league table, our current form as follows; L-L-D-D-D-W

Last time out saw us beat Bromley 4.0 in the F.A Trophy and line up as follows;

Seabright
Cruise
Downes
Pearce
Harding
Young
Bowman
Ajala
Cameron
Chapell
Berry

From a Torquay point of view there are no suspensions I know of , and the only injury doubt is Angus MacDonald, but Chris Hargreaves could have full squad to pick from. Taking it that Bromley are sat 2nd in the conference south and amongst the pre-season promotion favourites from that league, I don't think anyone can underestimate just how good a result and performances that was Saturday, however our team seems very much able to motivate themselves for Trophy games, yet our league form is far from good enough, if these players want the play-offs it's now or never, starting Saturday.

Seems only a few weeks ago that these would be considered whipping boys, now a win will put them level on points with Torquay.

Agreed. Our league has to improve, seen a few posts over the last few weeks suggesting that easier fixtures were ahead, however, looking at current form which of course can change very quickly, we're sat 18th in the league and heading for a 17th place finish in the final table, so I would suggest there are no easy games to come.

According to OS Ryan Bowman is a real doubt for Saturday. For those who find his current form frustrating a rest may be a good thing and give Briscoe a chance to play as the main striker.

This is just down the road from me, so obviously I'll be there. Unless it's postponed of course. It rains every single day.

If anyone is going, there's a wealth of places to drink and eat in the town centre.
Historically it's an affluent area and quite attractive.
There are three 'Belgian' beer bars alone.
'The Trappist', 'Mort Subite' and 'The Belgian Bar' all within walking distance from the other.
If real ale is more your thing, there's pubs dotted about and there's the Dunham Massey Brewery tap at a pub called Costello's in Goose Green, which is basically a square where every building is either a bar or restaurant.
There's also the Market where you'll find Blackjack Beers brewery tap.
The football ground is a walk away from all these places, which are in the centre.
I'm hoping for three points from this one. There's no reason why we shouldn't take the game by the scruff of the neck and control it. Bowman not being fit could be a blessing in disguise because I think Briscoe is the 2nd most talented player at the club, albeit the least fittest.

On paper there is potential for this to be a good day as a fair few of the teams higher in the league are playing each other.

About time for a goal from Briscoe, and Young is overdue come to think of it. COYY 0-2 Torquay. Safe trip to all those headed up north, I don't fancy crossing the Pennines in the fog and possible snow..

Hope game is on. Just left Middleton( North Manchester ) and it is snowing. And snowfall is further expected between 5am to midday, with rain after. Hopefully Altrincham being further away from the Pennines will result in just sleet, but wrap up it's going to be cold and grim. No doubt mr bastard will turn up in t-shirt and shorts

There's not been any snow in Stretford/Chorlton, but there never is because it's practically sea level. I presume Altrincham is the same because it's only a couple of miles south.
But yeah, it should be pretty baltic.
