If you actually think that our problems are just "not having someone to put the ball in the net" you are delluded. Aldershot were an average team but could have quite easily scored four in the last twenty minutes.
O'Kane isn't a central midfield player. Stevens is too lightweight. Branston and Charnock were all over the shop. There are plenty of problems there and none of those involve strikers.

We have players that know where the goal is. Benyon is a decent striker at this level, but as long as we persist with this stupid formation, that results in him spending the entire game chasing long balls into the channels, he isn't going to score goals. At the start of the season, when we were playing 4-4-2 (and i mean for 90 minutes, not interspersed with 3 or 4 other formations in the same 90 minutes), he was scoring. Give him chances in the box, and he'll take them. Ask him to spend the entire game chasing defenders towards the corner flags, and the returns will not be great. We don't need a new striker, we need to revert to the tactics that will create some chances for the ones we've got. The answer to every self-imposed problem is not 'go out and sign someone else'. These players were doing perfectly well at the start of the season, and will do so again, but only when we put the needs of the many ahead of the needs of the few.

There's not a lot of balance in the comments on this thread following last night's game.

First thing to note was that this was a much better performance than Saturday, particularly in midfield where Mansell was outstanding.

Second, Aldershot are a very tidy unit - well set up and hard to break down. Despite that we did well to create a hatfull of good chances, aprticularly after Gritton came on, and it was only the introduction of Gutteridge that swung the game away from us. Until then there was only going to be one winner.

Third, we were unlucky with the goal - a ricochet off Robbo caused by the weather put Branston in trouble.

Fourth, the referee was, indeed, appalling and for some reason seemed to have it in for United.

The game IMHO gave a number of pointers:

* We are more comfortable with 442
* Lathrope has something to offer
* Mansell should keep the captaincy
* Robbo is best at RB
* Ellis is being sorely missed
* Charnock may be a better partner for Ellis than Branston
* Gritton is needed to provide a physical presence up front

And finally:

* We are not good enough for the play-offs
